Beaches, in New York City? That’s right, as great as gay New York is for its hustle and bustle, the beaches of the Big Apple and its surrounding area are well worth the required effort to reach them. Here’s our guide to the ones worth checking out.
Fire Island
The Island is notorious in gay culture and is certainly Gay New York's best beach. The sand on this island's shore stretch for miles.
Hot male bodies flaunt themselves in Speedos or less during the region's beach months, turning the island into a queer paradise. The gay scene here dates back to the 1930s and this beautiful locale welcomes people from all walks of life.
Getting to Fire Island requires a ride on the Long Island Railroad, a taxi ride, a ferry ride, and a walk to your accommodation, but it’s well worth the effort!
Jones Beach
East of Fire Island, Jones Beach requires a longer ride aboard the Long Island Railroad. Once there, visitors can join the locals and let it all hang out at the so-called Beach Six, but, beware: you can get ticketed as nudity isn’t officially legalized on this beach.
City options
Gay New York also loves a plot of federal land in New Jersey known as Gunnison Beach, one of the largest nude beaches on the East Coast. To find the gays, walk down to the southernmost section of Area G where being clothed makes you stand out more than being nude.
If all else fails, there's always good ol' Coney Island, just a trainride away. It's not strictly gay but there's a beach! Christopher Street Pier is also an option for hanging out and catching the rays on the grass outside.
