Pride di Pittsburgh

La prima Pride Parade di Pittsburgh si è svolta il 17 giugno 1973, solo quattro anni dopo i disordini di Stonewall a New York City. Circa 150 marciatori hanno camminato in salita da Market Square a Flagstaff Hill a Oakland. Il giorno prima, Gay Alternatives Pittsburgh (GAP) aveva noleggiato un tram locale. Il tram queer ha viaggiato da Market Square, attraverso Castle Shannon, Dormont, Beechview e di nuovo in centro. Quella sera si tenne un ballo alla Unitarian Church.
Negli anni seguenti, un evento si tenne ogni anno a giugno, con il percorso della parata che cambiava di anno in anno.
Sulla scia dell'epidemia di AIDS negli anni '80, non ci furono più parate Pride fino a un viaggio di rinascita nel maggio 1991, quando 500 gay e amici si recarono al Point dalla Civic Arena.Nel 2001, il Gay and Lesbian Community Center (GLCC) prese in mano il Pride, organizzando e spostando l'evento a Schenley Meadow. Nel 2002, un'ampia partecipazione alla parata spinse la folla a circa 10.000 persone. Nel 2003, Pittsburgh ha segnato 30 anni di celebrazioni del Pride con una parata e un festival di strada a Shadyside. Il PrideFest è stato preceduto da una serie di attività tra cui l'Unity Ball, il 2° concorso annuale Mr. Pittsburgh Drag King, una Pride Run/Walk e una performance del trio comico/cabaret gay/lesbico Unitard.
Nel 2005, la parata si è snodata attraverso il centro, attraverso il fiume Allegheny fino al Riverfront Park sulla North Shore. Un'area di attività per bambini è stata aggiunta per la prima volta e la Pride Night al PNC Park si è tenuta la settimana precedente.
Nel 2006, la Pride Awareness March ha preso il via dal centro e ha incluso il PA Governor. La novità di quest'anno è stata l'aggiunta di un secondo palco.
Nel 2007, il sindaco Luke Ravenstahl è stato il primo sindaco di Pittsburgh a salire sul palco del festival.

While the PrideFest weekend officially kicks off on Saturday, June 8, the preceding week is full of activities and chances to participate in everything from a 5k Fun Run and outdoor concerts, to the much-anticipated Big Gay Picnic on Memorial Weekend. Most events are family-friendly except for the picnic - you must be over 18 to attend. 

On Saturday, June 8 at 12 noon, Liberty Avenue between 6th Street and 10th Street in downtown Pittsburgh is the center of activity for the start of an unforgettable Pittsburgh pride experience. With more than 175 vendors and food trucks, continuous live entertainment on three separate stages, the fabulous PRIDE Radio Dance Party, and plenty of family-friendly games and activities, there's something here for everyone to enjoy. This event is Pittsburgh Pride at its finest! 

The Pittsburgh Pride Parade will kick off on Sunday, June 9 at 12 noon and it is expected to be even bigger and better for 2019. The 'guesstimated' crowd in 2017 was 175,000, and even larger in 2018 with an estimated 185,000 attendees. The rally will be held at the intersection of Boulevard of the Allies and Grant Street, and it will highlight the early struggles of the LGBTQ community and honor all those who participated in those struggles. At 12:30pm, the Pittsburgh Pride Equality March will make a left turn onto Grant Street, another left onto Fifth Avenue, and then end approximately a mile later at Liberty Avenue.

Bands, colorfully decorated floats, and marching groups comprise the majority of the parade, but onlookers are encouraged to join in to help carry the 20' x 30' Rainbow Flag or one of the many other flags and banners that symbolize LGBTQ unity. Welcoming 'outsiders' into their midst carries out the 'We Are One' parade theme for 2019.
