Gay Local Tips in Copenhagen

Something is gay in the city of Denmark

André is an ambassador for this capital city, which he believes is fit for a king. He is a great host, and is excited to share with you the place he calls home. In Copenhagen you will find a wide range of entertainment, culture and shopping. You can bask in the continental atmosphere, and visit destinations such as Tivoli Gardens Amusement Park and the Copenhagen Zoo. The city has a long and rich history, but at the same time it is youthful, innovative and LGBTQ-friendly. This can be felt by the warm and open attitude of the locals. Explore Copenhagen, experience your pride.

How gay-friendly is your city? What’s gay life like there?

Copenhagen is very much gay-friendly, in the sense that you can party at any bar in the city regardless of it being 'gay' or not. The gay scene is small, but lively and fun. Danes are known as the Mediterraneans of Scandinavia - fun-loving party people! What I mean to say is that you are going to have a good time here, and I am sure that the city will welcome you with open arms.

What are the best gay events that take place in your city each year?

Summer is definitely the season to visit Copenhagen. There is a huge celebration of Copenhagen Street Life and Dance Music every year in May called Distortion. Several block parties are held simultaneously across the inner city, with Gaystortion being the gay street party. Then in August there's Copenhagen Pride, which is one of the highlights of the year. The Pride Parade invites everyone and anyone to join and walk and dance, and it ends with colorful street parties downtown.

We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?

Take a walk around downtown and make your way to Nyhavn. Take some postcard-worthy pictures of the canal there, and hop on a canal boat tour - the best and quickest way to sightsee and enjoy Copenhagen from the water.

Then grab a bite at Oscar's, take a walk around the freetown of Christiania, and head back to your misterb&b host. It's time to get ready for a night on the town and meet some cute locals. Start with a beer at Cafe Oscar, and then head to Studiestræde - the gay street. Here you can choose cheap shots at Masken, a drink at Jailhouse in one of their cells, or a beer at Men's Bar with all the daddies. If you are in the mood for dancing, head to G-A-Y. If you are feeling a bit naughtier, pay a visit to the local sexclub, SLM. Regardless, end your night at Nevermind, but not before 3am... If by then you are not locking lips with a cute Dane, you might as well go home because this was it for tonight!

The next day, cure your hangover in the sun at Ørstedsparken or Kongens Have park.

What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?

Oscar's is definitely the place to go for a bite or a cup of coffee. It is conveniently located in the city center, and for ages it has been the gay café/restaurant of Copenhagen. If it is sunny, sit outside and watch cute Danes walk past while enjoying a cold beer.

Best gay place for a cheap beer or happy hour?

The place for cheap drinks and shots is Masken. Everyone goes to Masken for the shots - dare you to take them as bodyshots! For a younger crowd, head around the corner to G-A-Y where all the young guys go dancing.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

There aren't that many gay clubs in Copenhagen. Dive bars rule the scene. So if you want to dance, you should go to G-A-Y and join the kids death-dropping, or end the night at Nevermind which is a staple in the community and where all the guys stop on their way home. It gets crowded in the wee hours, but all the hotties are there. If you are looking for a more alternative scene, then there is Warehouse9 that regularly hosts queer parties and events, so check their calendar. Other bars in the Meatpacking District like Jolene and Bakken also cater to the alternative queer scene and are worth a visit.

Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill out?

Amager Strandpark in the summer is the best option if you need a sandy beach in the city. There you can also freely use the male part of Helgoland bathing complex, which is clothing-optional and popular with the local gays.

Sunny summer days see the locals inundate the city center harbor area for sunbathing, dips into the water, and beer drinking with friends. Areas like Krøyers Plads, Ofelia Beach, Kongens Have, Nordhavn and Islands Brygge are very popular with the boys. They're great spots for enjoying all the eye-candy too!

Where can we get the best view of Copenhagen?

The top of Rundetårnet downtown or Church of our Saviors in Christianshavn will give you a really special glimpse into the city.
