Gay Local Tips in Melbourne

Pride in the City by the Bay

How gay-friendly is your city? What’s gay life like there?

Melbourne is one of the most successful multicultural cities in the world, made up of all nationalities, ages, demographics and sexualities. Melbourne is also one of the most gay-friendly cities I have ever been to and I'm proud to call it home. The gay life is varied and interesting, offering something for everyone whether it be old-school drag bars, contemporary nightclubs, fetish nights or one-off parties. However, the gay community is not limited to the gay scene for things to do, they are welcome at almost any venue and event across Melbourne and its inner suburbs.

What are the best gay events that take place in your city each year?

There are a number of events that take place in Melbourne throughout the year. Midsummer in January through to February and Chillout in March are the major events. If you're a little more adventurous, Trough parties are held every few months at Club 80.

We only have 48 hours in your city. What can’t we miss?

Must-see list: National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Zoo (one of the best in the world), Degraves Lane for street art, the Botanical Gardens and The Shrine of Remembrance, St Kilda for the beach and atmosphere, The Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island and the penguin parade.

What’s your favorite gay place to grab a bite for lunch? A nice dinner?

Anywhere along Chapel Street or Greville Street in Prahran.

Best gay place and day for a cheap beer or happy hour?

Generally places on the north side of the city: Mollies and Sircuit are all great places to check out if you want to experience the gay scene in Melbourne.

We’re ready to party! What are the best gay clubs?

The north side is best for the hipsters, while for bears, cubs, leather and working class men I would suggest The Laird, The Peel, Sircut, Mollies and DT's. South Side for party boys and clubbers: Love Machine, Poof Doof, Revolver, The Emmerson, The Railway. If you are looking for more of an alternative scene, I would recommend The North Side and Sircuit Bar.

Are there any places related to LGBTQ history?

Only online: The Australian Gay and Lesbian Archives, however, there are plans to build an LGBTQ centre in St Kilda. This is a great project that could really enrich the cultural landscape of Melbourne.

Can you share a secret or little-known place to visit in your city?

There are so many, but they're not gay specifically. In the CBD, there are lots of secret rooftop bars including Madame Brussels and Peacock Lounge.

Any beaches, parks or best other places to chill out?

The nicest beach close to the city is Port Melbourne through to St Kilda. Sunnyside on the Mornington Peninsula is an LGBTQ-friendly nudist beach, which is about 50 minutes from the CBD. The Botanical Gardens in the city are beautiful, and a great place to relax.

Where can we get the best view of Melbourne?

There is a large ferris wheel in the Docklands that provides a great view over the city. Otherwise the viewing platform from the Eureka Tower is also amazing, you can really take in the beauty of the city from up there.
