Adult Behavioral Health & Developmental Disability

Welcome

The Bureau of Specialty Behavioral Health Services carries out responsibilities specified in the Michigan Mental Health Code, and federally approved Medicaid State Plan, §1115 Behavioral Health Demonstration, a 1915 (i) state plan and a Behavioral Health §1915(c) waiver. The Bureau also administers federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment as well as Community Mental Health Services Block Grants. Specialty Behavioral Health Services include those for people with developmental disabilities, mental illness, serious emotional disturbance, and substance use disorders. Services and supports are primarily covered by Medicaid and delivered through Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans (PIHPs). Each PIHP region is required to have an extensive array of services that allows for maximizing consumer choice and control. Services are delivered through county-based Community Mental Health Services Programs (CMHSP) as well as other contracted network providers.

Wellness Supports and a Listening Ear

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has established a warmline for persons with mental health conditions.  The warmline will be operated by Certified Peer Support Specialists. Individuals calling the warmline will be provided with support by peers who have their own lived experience with mental health issues. They will be providing wellness supports and a listening ear.
