Division of Maternal & Infant Health Programs

The Division of Maternal & Infant Health is home to an array of public health programs, initiatives and interventions aimed at improving the health and well-being of birthing people, infants, families and communities. The division is committed to addressing birth equity by focusing on innovative, multi-disciplinary collaborations, addressing root causes of inequities, challenging systematic barriers, and creating actionable solutions to improve health outcomes.

Advancing Healthy Births

Michigan's Advancing Healthy Births plan focuses on sustainable actions and multifaceted approaches to improve outcomes for birthing people and their infants.

Breastfeeding

The breastfeeding initiative is removing barriers, advancing equity, and promoting breastfeeding as essential for infant nutrition, social emotional health, and chronic disease prevention by ensuring all families have the opportunity to breastfeed for as long as they choose.

Doula Initiative

The Doula Initiative expands the Michigan doula network, supports Medicaid doula providers and promotes equitable access to doula services.

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI)

EHDI provides better outcomes for Michigan newborns, young children with hearing loss, and their families, through early hearing screening, appropriate audiological diagnosis, and intervention.

The Michigan Family Planning Program offers affordable, high-quality reproductive health care to help individuals and families plan and space pregnancies, supporting informed choices and healthier communities.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD)

The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) program aims to increase awareness, prevention, evaluation and diagnosis, and support families impacted by FASD.

Infant Safe Sleep

The Infant Safe Sleep Program works to promote awareness about how babies can sleep safest to help prevent sleep-related infant deaths. Learn more about infant safe sleep, find resources for families, find training and communication tools for professionals.

Maternal Infant Health Program (MIHP)

Michigan's statewide evidenced-based home visitation program for pregnant people and infants up to 12 months of age who are eligible for Medicaid insurance.

Michigan's Title V Maternal and Child Health Program

The Title V MCH Block Grant supports a range of programs and services to improve the health and well-being of the state’s mothers, infants, children, adolescents, and children with special health care needs.

Michigan Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MI PQC)

The MI PQC and nine Regional Perinatal Quality Collaboratives (RPQCs) work statewide to improve outcomes for birthing people, infants and families through quality improvement efforts that are tailored to the strengths and challenges of their respective region.

Safe Delivery

Safe Delivery is a law that allows for the safe, legal, and confidential surrender of a newborn, up to three days (72 hours) old, to an Emergency Service Provider (ESP).
