The Overton Park Shell is an historic bandshell and museum in Midtown Memphis' beautiful Overton Park and is home to the stage where many claim live rock & roll was born in 1954, when 19-year-old Elvis Presley played his first professional gig during a country music show headlined by yodeler Slim Whitman. As related in its new indoor Backstage History Experience museum tour, “The Shell” remained important to Elvis and his family, as they continued to come back and perform there over the years.
Surviving many ups and downs, and presenting myriad genres of music since being built during The Great Depression, The Shell of today is a cutting-edge regional performing arts pavilion, offering 50 free concerts yearly with great sound and lights for up to 3,000 music lovers in a gorgeous park setting.
The Shell’s other great Overton Park neighbors include the Memphis Zoo, The Brooks Museum of Art, the National Ornamental Iron Museum, the Overton Park Golf Course, a family playground, a dog park, and miles of beautiful walking trails with scenic open spaces.
