In 2020, the fight to slow the spread of COVID-19 among school-aged children made field trips and school-based outings especially difficult. Rock 'n' Soul knows that field trips are important tools to expose young students to immersive learning opportunities (like those we offer at the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum). COVID-19 stripped our County’s youngest constituents of childhood as we once knew it, and placed the burden on parents for these unique learning opportunities. Fortunately, in the Summer of 2020, the Shelby County Mayor’s Office launched the "901 Student Passport."
For its fourth consecutive year, the "901 Student Passport" Program returns with year-round programming and a great partnership with the Shelby County Mayor's Office of Innovation and YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South.
The signature 10-week Summer Staycation program of the "901 Student Passport" Program runs from May 27, 2024, through August 2, 2024, and provides students and their parent or guardian with free attendance to participating museums... including Rock 'n' Soul.
To participate, school-age students should have received a "901 Student Passport" card through their school. Students can also pick up cards from any Shelby County neighborhood YMCA location. They will receive instructions on how to register their card. The "901 Student Passport" card will continue to be used to "unlock" a variety of student-friendly opportunities all over Shelby County.
Each child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who will also be admitted for free. They may attend any public school, charter school, private school or home school in located in Shelby County, TN. The "901 Student Passport" cannot be used by student groups (scout troops, summer camps, etc.), but can only be used by individual students and their accompanying parent or guardian.
“Arts, history, and culture are critical to the fabric of our community," said Mayor Harris. "We want to support museums and galleries, expose our virtual learners to cultural experiences, and ensure that more residents have an opportunity to enjoy the arts. Each of these locations is a cultural asset in our community.”
