According to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), there were 20 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in 2021 across the US, two shy of the record set in 2020. These events caused at least 688 fatalities, many injuries and over $145 billion in disaster costs, which is the third highest cost on record.
