Updated COVID-19 Vaccines
The latest COVID-19 vaccines now protect against the current variants of the virus.
- Everyone 6 months and older should get a 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine.
- Most people need just one dose.
- It’s safe to get both the COVID-19 and influenza vaccine during the same visit.
Some people may need more than one dose, including:
- Those with weakened immune systems
- Children aged 6 months to 4 years (depending on previous vaccinations)

Types of COVID-19 Vaccines
In the U.S., there are two types of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax:
- Pfizer and Moderna (mRNA vaccines): These vaccines use temporary genetic code to help your body recognize and fight the virus. This code is harmless and breaks down after the immune system has learned to respond.
- Novavax (protein-based vaccine): This vaccine uses a small, harmless protein from the virus to train your immune system to fight it.
How to Get a COVID-19 Vaccine
You can get a COVID-19 vaccine at:
- Doctor’s offices
- Community health centers
- Pharmacies
If you have health insurance, including Medicare or MaineCare (Medicaid), the vaccine should be covered. Check with your health care provider for details.
Free COVID-19 Vaccines for Under and Uninsured Adults
With the early end of the Bridge Access Program in August 2024, the Maine Immunization Program (MIP) has partnered with independent pharmacies and providers to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are available for free. Through this program, Moderna and Novavax vaccines are available toadults 19 or older who are either under or uninsured. To find a list of locations offering the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as other locations offering additional vaccines, please visit: 317 Adult Vaccine Providers.

The following locations are now accepting appointments to provide vaccinations for COVID-19. Appointment availability is dependent on vaccine supply and staffing. Maine CDC recommends making an appointment or calling the location to ensure vaccines can be given on a walk-in basis.
