YAI’s travel training team led a session called "Effective Curriculum for Tomorrow's Travelers" at the Association of Travel Instruction (ATI) conference in Charlotte! They explored how to prepare individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) for successful travel, both virtually and in-person. From navigating crowded streets to problem-solving and coping mechanisms, this workshop provided a comprehensive review of three pre-travel training curriculums designed to empower safe and confident travel on public transit, specifically focusing on New York City. http://ow.ly/2RE950AQYWp The GCPLA is a comprehensive assessment of community participation and use of leisure time for individuals with intellectual disabilities. While The GCPLA is a checklist, it is intended to be used in a semi-structured interview format whereby the service user describes their experiences. If the service user has insufficient language then carers can be used as respondents. The GCPLA produces both quantitative and qualitative data for analysis. The GCPLA was initially designed to support an individual planning system in the assessment and generation of community participation and leisure needs, and to monitor the outcomes of interventions designed to increase and enhance the individual service user's experience of community and leisure activities. It may also be of use in individual planning, service evaluation, and staff training.

Director of Education Programs | 14+ Years in ESL & Program Leadership | Championing Adult Education in the Low Country | Studying the Experiences of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families in K-12 Schools
Sharing an insightful article on the challenges faced by English Learners (ELs) with disabilities and the critical need for collaboration between ESL and Special Education (SPED) departments. The article highlights a significant issue: these departments often operate in silos, leading to a disproportionate representation of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in SPED programming. While the article underscores the importance of departmental collaboration, my dissertation is exploring an essential, yet often overlooked, aspect — the engagement of parents in the SPED identification and placement process. I deeply believe that until parents from CLD backgrounds are actively involved in this collaboration, we won’t see a change in the disproportionate numbers. Parents can provide invaluable insights into their child’s needs and challenges, which are crucial for accurate identification and appropriate placement. Their involvement can bridge gaps, foster understanding, and ensure that our educational approaches are more equitable and effective. Let’s work towards a more inclusive and collaborative approach that includes the voices of parents. Their perspectives are not just valuable but essential in creating a fair and supportive educational environment for all students. #SpecialEducation #ELs #Collaboration #ParentalEngagement #EducationalEquity #DissertationResearch
Innovative programs blending bilingual and special education are crucial to address these students' diverse needs, promoting cultural competency and collaboration among educators. Read more from Education Week : https://bit.ly/3YabCW0 #ELs #ELL #Education #SpecialEducation
