NHTSA ADDs PEDs TO ITS MISSION! WOW!! What a great 'gift' for pedestrians in the US...NHTSA decides to add new testing procedures for evaluating motor vehicle designs so that they are less efficient "traffic weapons" for anyone NOT inside a vehicle. This would seem to pick up such work that has long languished in the US (since the 1960s?) and joins world standards...plus US Congress' shot across NHTSAs bow last month...necessary as the dire US pedestrian injury and fatality data had been 'unheard' in the C Suite of NHTSAs HQ. I hope NHTSAs new test procedures that simulate a head-to-hood impact will be 'effective' as that 'horse' may have already left the [burning] barn given how high many truck / SUV hoods are now for many PEDs vs say 20 years ago. Good bye to the 'Mega Frunk'?!...stay tuned. https://lnkd.in/g3WmXq2c

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA is making significant strides in combating drunk driving-related fatalities. In accordance with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety Strategy, #NHTSA has initiated an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (#ANPRM) to make alcohol-impairment detection technology a standard feature in new passenger vehicles. This ANPRM is a pivotal step towards setting technology standards for alcohol impairment detection, aiming to incorporate it as a standard component once the technology reaches maturity. This announcement is timely, coinciding with NHTSA's launch of the annual holiday season campaign, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," emphasizing the importance of responsible driving. As alcohol impairment continues to be a leading cause of road fatalities in the U.S., this proactive move by NHTSA underlines their commitment to improving road safety. #DriveSober #AutobodyNews #RoadSafety #AlcoholDetection #DriveResponsibly #RoadSafetyStrategy #RoadSafetyAwareness #TrafficSafety

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA's Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2023 Earlier this month, NHTSA released its latest projections for traffic fatalities in 2023, estimating more miles driven and lower fatality rates compared to 2022. NHTSA estimates that 40,990 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2023, a decrease of about 3.6% as compared to 42,514 fatalities reported to have occurred in 2022. The fourth quarter of 2023 represents the seventh consecutive quarterly decline in fatalities beginning with the second quarter of 2022. *READ MORE in their Traffic Safety fact sheet* #trafficsafety https://lnkd.in/etA_99QP Melissa Ostergaard

Welcome news. Dazzling LED headlights on modern cars are not just a problem for other motorists - they make life difficult for pedestrians as well, especially those with visual impairments. Crossing the road at night can be difficult enough as it is, but if all you can see is an intensely bright beams of light it's very hard to judge the speed and distance of approaching vehicles to identify a safe gap. I mean, it's great if some drivers can now see 80 miles down the road, but the rest of us can't see a damn thing. #roadsafety https://lnkd.in/eDcaMnhc

Federal agency makes progress on impaired driving tech mandate The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is taking steps toward regulating advanced impaired driving prevention technology. Deputy Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg announced a call for public comments before proposing rules on this technology. The NHTSA aims to collect information for performance requirements and potential mandates for new vehicles to include impaired driving prevention tech. This follows a 2021 mandate for new passenger vehicles to have systems measuring driver blood alcohol content. The agency seeks collaboration with advocates, academics, and innovators to accelerate the development of effective impaired driving prevention technology. Despite advancements in vehicle tech and research on driver state and performance measurement, challenges like distinguishing between impaired states and preventing false positives persist. The NHTSA recognizes these challenges and the need to harness existing technologies for detecting and preventing impaired driving. The agency is committed to utilizing technology to reduce drunk driving crashes significantly. Following the congressional mandate, the NHTSA researches prepares cost estimates, and seeks public feedback before finalizing regulations. The notice invites comments online within 90 days of its publication in the Federal Register under Docket No. NHTSA-2022-0079. The NHTSA's proactive approach aligns to leverage technology as the ultimate solution for preventing impaired driving collisions and enhancing road safety. Transport Canada’s National Collision Database (NCDB) contains the most recent data on all reportable motor vehicle collisions in Canada. Here are some key findings: • In 2021, the number of motor vehicle fatalities was 1,768; up 1.3% from 2020 (1,746). • The age group with the highest number of fatalities was 65 and above, with 378 fatalities. • The age group with the highest number of serious injuries was 25-34, with 1,612 serious injuries. • Drivers consistently represent the largest portion of road fatalities, maintaining an approximate 50% share from 2017 to 2021. Remember, drivers have a duty, especially towards more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists, to be alert and attentive when travelling on public roads. #NSDW #distracteddrivinghurts #distracteddriving #canada #roadsafety #drivewise #vulnerableroadusers #statistics #infographic

Is there any data on age relatedness on the level of concern? When I was responsible for Australian eye protection standards (usually visors for motorcyclists, but including tinted windscreens) I did some analysis and found that veiling luminance -which increases with age - was a key factor, if there is any data on the incidence of concerns with advancing age this would be a helpful factor in addressing this issue https://lnkd.in/gZVKux4W

1wPS...Though my bright shiny hopes may be dulled by reading the details of NHTSAs proposal vs press release : as it is to be capped for passenger vehicles with a GVWR of 4,536 kilograms (kg) (10,000 pounds (lb)) AND lighter...not heavier. The old 10k limit becomes less relevant to per the intent to separate commercial from passenger vehicles now with EV battery packs adding weight AND many SOV are commuting with what once would have been a commercial vehicle (pick up trucks etc.)
