Mechanics are hard to come by. Car/truck repair places have it bad, but getting talent to service GSE is even harder, I would argue. Some leaders see mechanics as a commodity; I look at them differently. These are caring craftsmen whose work on a machine is self expression. In many ways an art form, held back by the arena they are in. About a year ago AES recruited me to establish policies, processes and procedures for our stations. Part of that task is tooling the stations. The tooling is selected with an eye towards cost of course, but safety, efficiency, after sales support, ability to duplicate in other markets and redeploy-ability are also considered. And knowing who is using these tools is considered. What we provide is a reflection of the value we give our teammates. After a year of visiting A LOT of stations and getting feedback I think I'm dialing it in. In fact, a few weeks ago when I took the shop for lunch, one told me he wouldn't leave even for what I thought was a lot of money. He likes how hes treated, the tools he has and the leadership. That makes all the hard, but very fun work worth it. He values the arena provided to perform his craft. I agree with him. It's great to be somewhere that aligns with one's values, ethics and vision for excellence. Not long ago my vision was disregarded, now its celebrated.
