🚢 This week marks two years since Yara made history by christening Yara Birkeland, the world’s first fully electric, autonomous, zero-emission container ship.   Yara Birkeland - named after one of the company’s co-founders, Kristian Birkeland, carries a great sense of pride for Yara. Using Sumo Vita is similar to buying an offset in some ways, but is actually a much more tangible and powerful way to drive real change. Let’s take the example of booking a flight – you may have noticed the carbon offset option on the airline’s website. The idea is that an offset will cancel out the carbon emissions from your flight. You pay for someone to cancel (retire) a carbon offset certificate which was generated by some kind of project, sometime in the past, somewhere in the world. As well as being very abstract and intangible, buying offsets can be a bit controversial because they do nothing to change the future emissions of the airline you flew with. In theory the emissions from your flight were balanced by the certificate that was retired, but nothing got better or changed, so your next flight will generate the same amount of CO2 and you’ll have to do it all over again. Remember, the goal is to get our retailers to zero emissions asap. With Sumo Vita you pay for new trees to be planted in a local project of your choice; trees that you can see and track over time, and which will help to restore native forests and biodiversity. Your trees are planted in certified reforestation projects, so they are carefully managed and audited to ensure they are removing CO2.

Today is #NationalCleanAirDay and a chance for us all to think about what we can do to make our planet better. MPI has a carbon reduction plan in place 62% of residual carbon has already been removed from the company since the initial baseline was established, equating to 47.77 tonnes. 11.44t CO2e have been removed from the business in 2023. MPI has a small fleet of company vehicles, however it has commenced the transition of the fleet from fossil fuel to hybrid and EV cars, which has resulted in a reduction in vehicle emissions by around 60% over the past 5 years. MPI is carbon neutral, as it offsets an equivalent amount for the volume it produces each year through a tree planting buddying scheme and is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2030. At MPI last week for Big Green Week we encouraged staff to ditch the car and find another way into work and we are doing the same today.
