Interns are at increased risk due to the inherent power imbalance with their superiors. In many cases, interns are not considered employees. Therefore, they are not protected by government legislation or workplace policies. This creates a dangerous environment that is often exploited. General Counsel @ Qover 🚀 Leader in embedded insurance orchestration - Head of Legal, Insurance & Compliance - Head of Sustainability - Board Corporate Secretary
It's time to step up ☝️ and help bridging barriers. The idea that everyone is given an equal chance to succeed is embedded in many western politics and culture. But the reality is that students start off in different places in ways that are sometimes difficult to overcome. Place of birth, social background, education of the parents play a key role in the future of students. That's why Qover is once again taking part in the Step Up internship program (a FedEx initiative)! You might recall Mustafa Simsek, our summer legal intern who was a great help to the team. We're looking to host another intern this year, and I hope other companies will follow suit and join the Step Up program to help foster more inclusive opportunities for the next generation of legal talents. It can be challenging to find the right opportunities, especially in the legal field where connections can make the difference. I was fortunate enough to have access to precious career advice and a network early on, which helped me get my foot in the door. But not everyone has that option and it shouldn't hold anyone back from building their dream career. At Qover, we're committed to creating space for diversity and equal chances for young people to gain experience, grow their skills and make valuable connections. I believe every company should get involved – it's up to us to drive the change we want to see. Want to join this inclusive and paid summer internship as a student in 2025? Title: Unpaid Internships: A Valuable Opportunity or Potential Harassment? As the debate around unpaid internships continues to gain traction, it's essential to delve into the complexities surrounding this practice. While some argue that unpaid internships offer valuable experience and networking opportunities, others raise concerns about exploitation and potential harassment. On one hand, unpaid internships can provide individuals with hands-on experience in their desired field, allowing them to gain valuable skills and knowledge that can enhance their future career prospects. Additionally, interns may have the opportunity to network with professionals in their industry, potentially leading to job opportunities down the line. For many, this can be a worthwhile investment of time and effort, despite the lack of financial compensation. However, it's crucial to acknowledge the potential drawbacks and ethical concerns associated with unpaid internships. Without proper regulation and oversight, unpaid internships can easily cross the line into exploitation. Interns may find themselves performing menial tasks unrelated to their field of study, effectively serving as free labor for the company. This can perpetuate a cycle of inequality, where only those who can afford to work for free can access valuable opportunities, further widening the gap between privileged and disadvantaged individuals. Moreover, the power dynamics inherent in intern-employer relationships can create an environment ripe for harassment and abuse. Interns may feel pressured to tolerate inappropriate behavior or harassment in fear of jeopardizing future career prospects. This imbalance of power can make it difficult for interns to speak out against mistreatment, perpetuating a culture of silence and impunity. In light of these concerns, it's essential for organizations to reassess their internship programs and ensure that they provide a safe and equitable environment for all participants. This includes offering fair compensation for interns' time and contributions, as well as implementing robust policies to prevent harassment and misconduct. Ultimately, unpaid internships can offer valuable experience and opportunities for career advancement, but only if they are conducted ethically and responsibly. It's time for businesses and institutions to prioritize the well-being and dignity of their interns, rather than exploiting them for cheap labor. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable workforce for the future. #UnpaidInternships #WorkplaceEthics #careerdevelopment

As the end of the school year nears, so does the annual surge of teenagers working #summerjobs or internships. Along with the surge, comes the risk of teens being abused in the #workplace. According to a Wall Street Journal report, around 25 percent of working adolescents are subjected to unwanted comments, advances, or assault while on the job, with some victims as young as 14. Do Interns Have a Voice? Hello LinkedIn community I've been curious about the rights of interns in the workplace, especially when it comes to addressing unfair working conditions. Do interns have the right to speak up if they encounter unfair treatment or working conditions? What are the guidelines and protections in place for them? I'd love to hear your insights and experiences on this topic. If you're an intern, have been one, or work closely with interns, your perspective would be invaluable. Looking forward to your thoughts! #InternRights #WorkplaceFairness #EmploymentLaw #CareerDevelopment #LinkedInDiscussion
