Thank you to these adorable pups, Penny and Maude, and their handlers, Patti and Gwen, of Superiorland Pet Partners, for visiting with our staff and patients recently! They regularly visit our hospital to provide animal-assisted therapy, which not only provides comfort to our patients, but is also proven to lower anxiety levels, increase mobility, provide relief from pain by diverting attention and focus to something positive, and encourage the development of social and behavioral skills in patients of all ages. Penny, Maude and their handlers have gone through many hours of training to provide this volunteer service, and we're very grateful to them! If you see Penny or Maude around, be sure to tell them what good dogs they are (Maude especially enjoys belly rubs). 🐾 #AnimalAssistedTherapy #PetTherapy #UPHSMarquette

ALLEY CAT ALLIES CONDEMNS THE CONSIDERATION OF LETHAL ACTION AGAINST COMMUNITY CATS IN NORTH HAVEN, CONNECTICUT❗ Though the town has now walked back a disturbing plan to catch and kill community cats starting October 1, the kneejerk jump to deadly approaches demonstrates a vital need for education and humane programs in the area. The town's suggestions that community cats are creating a public health crisis in North Haven are grossly misleading and not based in fact. Cats are not a significant public health threat in any way and it is exceedingly rare for them to be a disease risk of any kind. They are safe members of the North Haven community who deserve better. Alley Cat Allies is urging North Haven to implement an effective Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, as TNR is the only humane and effective approach to community cats. While a TNR ordinance exists in the town, there are numerous flaws with it as it stands. We aim to work with North Haven to ensure killing is never on the table and local laws and policies truly protect community cats and TNR.

🤔 WHAT'S THE GREATEST GIFT YOU'VE GIVEN? Have you ever received a gift that transcends the material? A token that continues to spark joy or inspire you long after you unwrapped it? The act of giving goes beyond generosity; it's a powerful tool for connection and building meaningful bonds. It's a primal human instinct, observed in animal behavior. For example, animals groom each other and even offer food to vulnerable members. Giving is in fact the very reason we exist because someone made the ultimate act of giving life - childbirth. What's the most impactful gift you've ever given or received?

Don't have an agenda, be patient, watch your dog. On Friday, I hosted the Live Expert Panel discussion (as part of the Panic to Peace virtual summit) where most of the speakers came together to answer and discuss the most commonly asked questions, e.g. 🐾 Best practices for helping a traumatized rescue dog settle and gain confidence 🐾 Often overlooked signs of anxiety in rescue dogs 🐾 Integrating a new rescue dog into a multi-dog household 🐾 The impact of spaying and neutering on hormone disruption and anxiety 🐾 How to break through the "anxiety loop" between us and our dogs If you’re registered, keep an eye out on Monday for the recording. If you’re not registered yet but curious, I think it’s worth signing up just for that (link in comments) And if you decide to upgrade to a VIP ticket, you’ll have lifetime access to the recordings, the private podcast so you can listen on the go, extra speaker gifts, detailed session notes, AND you’ll help support The Phenix Advocacy Center for R+ Canine Professionals - 10% of VIP pass proceeds are donated to go towards supporting canine professionals who are committed to ethical training and who do not use force, pain, fear or intimidation with animals. Because their wellbeing is crucial to helping dogs! The feedback so far has been heartwarming. I’ll do a proper debrief when it’s over but I already know that this wasn’t my last event of this kind. 🐾💃 #soultouchedbydogs #doglovers #virtualsummit

Happy National Kids and Pets Day! In honor of that, we would like to give a shout-out to all of the amazing therapy and service pets out there! Research studies have shown that animal-assisted therapy has a positive impact on overall well-being, including reducing anxiety, improving mood and decreasing heart rate. The presence of an animal can provide calm, comfort, and distraction for a child who is experiencing pain, discomfort and anxiety. Animal assisted activities, such as riding, petting or feeding the animal, provide opportunities for motivation, education and enhanced quality of life. Additionally, family members and caregivers present in the session can similarly benefit from AAT. I cannot emphasis enough the positive impact I have seen on many children (and adults) of dogs and horses on many behaviours and emotional distress. It is I assure you quite remarkable. How about assessments that are fully cognisant of this and care regimes adapted to consider this before the destructive adoption of constraint, isolation, secure settings etc etc. Where it is tried and works… Creates reduced intervention Better outcomes Significantly improved VFM
How Puplinda encourages children to come to school and stay calm. 🐶 Puplinda is qualified as a therapy dog, and completed an assessment with @Pets as Therapy (PAT). Christopher Gurney, our Deputy head also completed an Animal Assisted Therapy course to help support Puplinda and the children when at school. Students at Gesher tend to have a lot of general anxiety. So it’s helpful to them to know that they can sit with her when they’re feeling stressed out – being around the dogs has a noticeable impact, making them feel relaxed and positive about coming into school. Using a therapy dog at Gesher has resulted in: ⭐Children choosing to come to school because we arrange their therapy sessions with Puplinda on a day that is normally a problem for them - often a Monday or a Friday. ⭐Children who are upset become much calmer when the teacher suggests some quiet time with Puplinda. ⭐Students fearful of dogs learning to manage these emotions and on more than one occasion they've come Puplinda’s biggest fans. ⭐A cuddle and respite for teachers after a busy day. Born in October 2021, Puplinda is a Libra. One of her typical Libra traits is that she is very social and loves being around people. She has her own treat jar in the staff room, and her favourite treat is a chicken dumbell.

Ten years ago, URI embarked on a transformative journey with the launch of the People & Animals Living Safely (PALS) program. Dedicated to addressing the critical intersection of domestic violence and pets, PALS ensures that survivors can seek safety without leaving their beloved animals behind. Today, we're proud to acknowledge the invaluable support of our partners, including NYC Council Member Farah Louis (District 45), whose unwavering commitment has propelled legislative efforts in NYC to remove barriers to safety and healing for domestic violence survivors. URI expresses heartfelt gratitude for this support, and we're eager to continue our collaborative efforts in securing legislative and regulatory backing. Together, we can empower more individuals and families in crisis to stay and heal alongside their cherished pets. Today is Suicide Prevention Day, a reminder that mental health matters, and that it's okay to ask for help. 💚 Let's continue to support each other, spread kindness, and remind those around us that they are never alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out—there is always hope, and there are people who care. Together, we can make a difference. Let’s keep the conversation going, and let’s keep lifting each other up. You matter. #SuicidePreventionDay #YouAreNotAlone
🧡 On World Suicide Prevention Day, we honor this year’s theme: Changing the Narrative on Suicide. Our amazing UVC Partner, East El Paso Animal Hospital, knows that starting these conversations can be tough, but they’ve found creative ways to encourage their team to participate. 🎶 Inspired by Pitbull’s words, "This is for everybody goin' through tough times..." they’ve created a fun and uplifting environment where team members share encouraging notes to brighten each other’s days. 💬✨ Remember, a kind word or simple check-in can change someone’s day—or even save a life. Let’s not only start the conversation but keep the conversation going. What would you add? Drop it in the comments below! 💛 #WSPD2024 #StartTheConversation #YouAreNotAlone #UVC #UVCFamily #Empower #Support #Unite

GROUNDBREAKING HEARTWORM TREATMENT STUDY UNDERWAY AT LUCKY DOG'S SC CAMPUS! On April 2nd, Lucky Dog treated the first five dogs in our potentially groundbreaking heartworm treatment study. Conducted at our South Carolina Rescue Campus, Lucky Dog is partnering with the #FloridaShelterMedicineProgram, the Toronto Humane Society and PetSmart Charities to show the world heartworm disease need not be a death sentence. Over the next 2 years, Lucky Dog will be treating 200 dogs for heartworm disease in a randomized study to test the efficacy of the 2-shot and 3-shot melosarmine protocols. Our goal is to show shelters across the country that they can safely and effectively treat heartworm disease in a reasonable period of time in a shelter setting. If we are successful, we believe we can change the way heartworm positive dogs are viewed in shelters. Heartworm disease does not need to be a death sentence, and together with our partners, Lucky Dog will lead the way in lifesaving across the United States. #IAmLuckyDog #Innovation #GroundBreaking #HeartwormTreatment
