One of my biggest pet peeves is treating the needs of multi-language learners as the same as students with disabilities. Being bilingual is not a disability for one. Secondly, the expertise required to adequately service students with IEP’s and students who are learning English as a second language is vastly different and throwing them both under the umbrella of inclusion, without differentiating the two, is a major disservice to students. Unless an MLL student is identified as having a learning disability it’s no reason for them to be serviced by a special education teacher as opposed to an MLL teacher. #education #inclusionmatters #inclusiveeducation

Education is a fundamental right of every child. A substantial proportion of children in India suffer from various types of Learning Disabilities (LD). This article suggests that a majority of children with learning disabilities remain undetected in India due to different reasons including lack of awareness about the incidence and prevalence of LD, confusing regulations on the provision of accommodation for such children in schools and the medium of instruction. The article argues for a National Policy on Learning Disabilities that will provide uniform guidelines and direction to the regional and the local State.

Great to see this welcome announcement from Simon Harris on the rollout of new transformational courses for students with intellectual disabilities at third level. But also this week our government issued a circular (0002/2024) which details changes to the model for allocating Special Education Teaching (SET hours). This new model proposes to no longer include children with complex educational needs in the SET allocation for schools. Surely these children need to be the ones at the forefront of this allocation to ensure that they are prioritised in terms of their education? For years, charities have been providing children with Down syndrome with the essential therapies that they need, supporting children in school, providing training and ongoing support to teachers and SNAs and also providing these transformational courses to bridge the gap for students with intellectual disabilities between education and third level education and employment. These supports from charities are a lifeline for parents because the government have so badly failed to meet the requirements for their children. The government need to do better. And they need to ensure that education support is provided at ALL levels of a student’s education journey. Our children deserve so much better. 🔗 Circular - https://lnkd.in/eiwTyh7v #LeaveNoOneBehind #InclusiveEducationForAll
This mornings announcement from Simon Harris on new transformational courses for students with intellectual disabilities is hugely welcome. This will bring enormous opportunities for students with additional needs & recognises the important role we all have to play in society. I look forward to working with Minister Harris on the rollout of these courses.

Hi VET and RTO friends, once more I am asking for recommendations in Professional Development. Specifically looking for PD in supporting students with disabilities. For some context we are looking at entering South Australia with funded and subsidised training, but understand SA have deeper requirements then other states and territories in how trainees with disabilities will be supported over their qualifications. This has stimulated several conversations for us, around what our current PD plans are for 24/25 and how we can sharpen them, not just for our SA cohort but also our national footprint. So, with that being said, can anyone recommend upcoming activities to support RTO Trainers & Assessors around supporting students with disabilities? Vetr and VELG have been good start points, but am looking cast a wide net here.
