The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA is making significant strides in combating drunk driving-related fatalities. In accordance with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety Strategy, #NHTSA has initiated an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (#ANPRM) to make alcohol-impairment detection technology a standard feature in new passenger vehicles. This ANPRM is a pivotal step towards setting technology standards for alcohol impairment detection, aiming to incorporate it as a standard component once the technology reaches maturity. This announcement is timely, coinciding with NHTSA's launch of the annual holiday season campaign, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," emphasizing the importance of responsible driving. As alcohol impairment continues to be a leading cause of road fatalities in the U.S., this proactive move by NHTSA underlines their commitment to improving road safety. #DriveSober #AutobodyNews #RoadSafety #AlcoholDetection #DriveResponsibly #RoadSafetyStrategy #RoadSafetyAwareness #TrafficSafety

Federal agency makes progress on impaired driving tech mandate The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is taking steps toward regulating advanced impaired driving prevention technology. Deputy Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg announced a call for public comments before proposing rules on this technology. The NHTSA aims to collect information for performance requirements and potential mandates for new vehicles to include impaired driving prevention tech. This follows a 2021 mandate for new passenger vehicles to have systems measuring driver blood alcohol content. The agency seeks collaboration with advocates, academics, and innovators to accelerate the development of effective impaired driving prevention technology. Despite advancements in vehicle tech and research on driver state and performance measurement, challenges like distinguishing between impaired states and preventing false positives persist. The NHTSA recognizes these challenges and the need to harness existing technologies for detecting and preventing impaired driving. The agency is committed to utilizing technology to reduce drunk driving crashes significantly. Following the congressional mandate, the NHTSA researches prepares cost estimates, and seeks public feedback before finalizing regulations. The notice invites comments online within 90 days of its publication in the Federal Register under Docket No. NHTSA-2022-0079. The NHTSA's proactive approach aligns to leverage technology as the ultimate solution for preventing impaired driving collisions and enhancing road safety. Great to see the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA taking an active role in making US roads safer for (almost) all users. On Monday 29th April, NHTSA included Automatic Emergency Breaking (AEB) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) in its rules for passenger cars and light trucks starting in 2029. This is expected to save 360 lives and mitigate 24,000+ traffic injuries each year in the US! A good step in the right direction, albeit a slow one. As #ADAS technologies become more mature and cost-optimised, let's hope the momentum is kept for the inclusion of AEB and AES covering more scenarios/road users. https://lnkd.in/eYN9B3ys. https://lnkd.in/ew34tB5b

Big step forward from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA! Their new rule focuses on reducing serious injuries and saving lives by making vehicles safer for pedestrians. The proposed standard requires passenger vehicles to be designed to minimize the risk of injuries from head-to-hood impacts in crashes. As pedestrian fatalities continue to rise, this is exactly the kind of action we need to make our roads safer for everyone. #pedestriansafety #NHTSA #SaferRoads #VisionZero

This could be a huge step towards increasing pedestrian safety.
Very glad to see National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA is (at last) going to be bringing vehicle standards in line with our global peers in Europe and Asia with regard to pedestrian safety. Since the 1970s, safety advocates have been calling for the agency to add regulations that would make cars safer when they crash with pedestrians. Maybe it will be a new era at NHTSA with long time consumer advocate Jason Levine on board ;) 🤞🏼 https://lnkd.in/gqtyC9yr

🚗💡New NHTSA Rule Set to Reduce Rear-End Collision Rates 🛑👥 A new NHTSA rule requires Automatic Emergency Braking systems in all new passenger cars and light trucks by 2029. This crucial regulation is set to dramatically reduce rear-end collisions, saving at least 360 lives and preventing over 24,000 injuries each year. This new safety standard means advanced, life-saving technology will soon be standard in vehicles at all price points, not just high-end models. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gWYer6ig #RoadSafety #VehicleSafety #AEB #NHTSA #CDLAW #PersonalInjuryLaw #InnovationInSafety #LegalNews #TrafficSafety #SaveLives

Seems worth updating the nomenclature if only to give the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA a way to claim credit for improving vehicle safety short of physical recalls.

PEDESTRIAN DEATHS ON THE RISE. NHTSA PROPOSES NEW RULES TO CHANGE THAT: With annual pedestrian deaths increasing 57% from 2013 to 2022 (4,779 to 7,522) the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposes new rules aimed at a major cause of the increase: Large SUVs and pickup trucks that have grown in size and hood height in recent years, in turn causing driver blind spots. Under the proposed rule, test procedures would be set to simulate head-to-hood impact, as well as establish requirements to reduce the risk of head injuries. For more on pedestrian deaths and the role large trucks and SUVs play, see our recent blog (https://lnkd.in/eNbhV6qu) and the story below. #emergingissues #insuranceindustry
