Earlier this week, I brought my fully remote, distributed team together in Napa for a two-day offsite, where I intentionally stepped away from the typical planning and strategy sessions. Instead, I created space for us to simply connect.🙌 The days were mostly unstructured—a welcome break from the daily grind. We shared great meals, stories, and laughter—lots of it.🤣 Here’s what I walked away with: ✅ Immense gratitude for each person I work with. ✅ Confidence that those two days were time well spent. I truly believe that the supportive, psychologically safe environment we’ve built as a team is a direct result of the time we’ve dedicated to getting to know each other, understanding one another better, and prioritizing playfulness and fun. Too often, leaders underestimate the value of this type of connection, dismissing it as "fluff" or making minimal efforts, treating it as an afterthought. I was thrilled to spend time with Cory Rose, Senior Vice President of People & Total Rewards at TAG - The Aspen Group. Previously, Cory served in Senior Director of People and/or Total Rewards roles at Chime, Udemy and Delivery Hero.    Here were some of the key takeaways from our conversation together:    - When Cory went to college, both of her parents said "go to college, and study whatever you want to study because everyone ultimately ends up in some sort of business". So, she ended up with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and a minor in cross cultural humanities and Africana studies. Cory has since maintained a fascination for different cultures and points of view, and this naturally led to her focusing her professional work on people.    - When asked about something Cory is doing that is controversial but effective, she explained that they decided to pause their quarterly engagement surveys and bi-annual performance reviews. This allowed them to critically evaluate the purpose of these processes and what they were trying to solve for as a business. By deconstructing both of these critical programs, they were able to reintroduce a more focused approach—conducting employee listening sessions annually with a stronger emphasis on action planning and rolling out a refreshed quarterly performance management process. This new process emphasizes not only the "what" and "how" but also includes regular expectation check-ins, ensuring that team members have clarity on their performance throughout the year. Cory's response highlights the idea that sometimes you need to slow down in order to move forward more effectively.   One question Cory wanted to leave our community with was this - "In a constrained budget environment, what is one area where you would not cut back?" In March, BetterCloud acquired the Track product from G2. Not only was this acquisition fueled by a deep sense of partnership amongst our two companies, but I'm proud of how all the Track employees have integrated into BetterCloud, continuing to power an impactful product, supporting BetterCloud's growth and the value of spend management in the world of automation in SaaS. One thing I wasn't expecting through this event was awesome insights and learnings from Priti Patel as we discussed our respective DEI strategies. From this, at BetterCloud we implemented measuring iNPS (inclusion net promoter score) as a health metric of how inclusive and comfortable employees felt at work. The hope in this implementation, was to be able to take data to action, making an impact for employees faster and as a direct result of their feedback. I'm proud of the progress to date in how we've taken this metric to heart in how we identify specific actions to address across the company. It's made the work we do as a people team, real, measurable and impactful --is there anything better than that at work? Priti wrote about the use of iNPS in her recent blog post and Forbes article, and I'm honored to be alongside her implementing this new metric (links in comments). The Takeaway: --If you're going to acquire a company/product line, the people you partner with make the experience and integration that much better. --Be open to learning something new in any experience, you'll advance your thinking and make your company better along the way. --Oh, and, data + action over talk for DEI strategies, always.

More companies are moving away from traditional staffing and adopting direct methods to access talent. This trend underscores a shift towards stronger, direct connections with potential hires. 🤝 As discussed with my good friend Mickey Pelletier on The Future of Work Podcast, this change in talent sourcing is reshaping the industry landscape. Technology is decentralizing the market, tearing down the old barriers to make hiring more straightforward and less bureaucratic. The roles of MSPs and VMSs are evolving, not disappearing. They're integrating into this new framework, seeking harmony with direct hiring strategies. Change (often messy) can disrupt old models and lead to more efficient practices.
