The U.S. health system ranks last among 10 wealthy nations on key health equity, access to care and outcome measures, according to a new study by The Commonwealth Fund. Despite the fact it spends by far the most on healthcare, the analysis found the U.S. has a troubling record on health outcomes and it is failing to fulfill its fundamental obligation to keep people healthy. Fierce Healthcare has more on the survey findings and steps the industry must take to improve in these areas and achieve equitable growth. https://lnkd.in/gMu_tGKm

PwC recently released its 2024 "US Healthcare Consumer Insights and Engagement Survey," which found healthcare affordability and navigation challenges continue to beleaguer patient care access. The report also showed that Gen Z, millennial, uninsured and low-income patients were more likely to say it's difficult to know where to access care when they need it, indicating a need for healthcare, pharmaceutical and insurance companies to prioritize tailored outreach and educational services. https://lnkd.in/gPk6NiXK

"If we see [health equity] gaps, we ask, why do those gaps exist and how can we intervene? Then you need to monitor whether the things you are trying to do to close a gap are working. Are you seeing the gap in care closing? We want our patients—regardless of who they are and where they come from—to have the same outcomes." - Tipu Puri, Chief Medical Officer, UChicago Medicine. In a recent conversation with HealthLeaders, Dr. Puri explains that a health system or hospital needs to have intentionality about identifying gaps in health equity and closing those gaps. The first step in addressing health those is asking questions about health equity. The next step, he says, is harnessing data you can act on across multiple patient demographics, including race, gender and Zip codes. https://lnkd.in/gTGgiQwr
