We are the Leaders of Real, Off-Road Autonomy

About us

At Overland AI, we are redefining the landscape of defense technology with our pioneering approach to ground autonomy. We’re not talking commercial trucks and taxis on dirt roads. We’re talking no roads, no GPS, going cross country. Our OverDrive autonomy stack equips ground vehicles with the ability to maneuver tactically and independently across challenging terrains. For nearly a decade, our co-founder Byron Boots, a renowned figure in robotics and machine learning, has collaborated with the US Army Research Laboratory to enhance robotic capabilities for defense. This collaboration, coupled with rigorous testing in the DARPA RACER program, underpins our cutting-edge solutions. Our mission is clear: to transform land operations by delivering the most advanced and dependable ground autonomy solutions to the U.S. Military and Partner Nations. Our technology, capable of operating in GPS-denied environments and under various adverse conditions such as rain, fog, and night, sets new standards in the field. Join us as we continue to advance this crucial technology.

Our autonomy stack, OverDrive, works across platforms from small to big vehicles. Wheeled to tracked vehicles. Skid to ackerman steered vehicles. We're partnering with L3Harris Technologies to make the Diamondback a capable uncrewed system.

Real off-road autonomy has to work in the rain and the mud, with visual distractions including water and dirt on sensors, and changing dynamics due to mud and vegetation. Take a look at our OverDrive autonomy stack driving through complex vegetation in the rain: no prior maps, no pre-defined path, no teleoperation. Just realtime (1x) video of high-speed point-to-point navigation using onboard sensing and compute.

Our Overdrive autonomy stack climbing a steep, eroded, overgrown tank trail in a 12 ton tracked M5. This is real off-road autonomy: no prior maps, no pre-defined path, no teleoperation. Just realtime (1x) video of high-speed point-to-point navigation using onboard sensing and compute.

People sometimes ask why we always go fast. The answer is simple: because high-speed off-road autonomy is *hard.* You must see further, react quicker, and handle more complex dynamics. A single mistake entering a ditch or misclassifying a rock can wreck a vehicle. When designing an autonomy stack, methods that work just fine in off-road terrain at 5 miles an hour completely fail at 20. It’s not a linear progression, it’s a phase transition. If you only move slowly, you won’t even know what the real challenges are. Take a look at our OverDrive autonomy stack driving through a variety of off-road terrain at 20 mph: no prior maps, no pre-defined path, no teleoperation. Just realtime (1x) video of high-speed point-to-point navigation using onboard sensing and compute.

Watch our chase vehicle eat dust as the professional human driver struggles to keep pace with a 12 ton tracked Textron M5 piloted by our OverDrive autonomy stack ripping through complex cross country terrain. This is real off-road autonomy: no prior maps, no pre-defined path, no teleoperation. Just realtime (1x) video of high-speed point-to-point navigation using onboard sensing and compute.

Peer into the mind of the machine! Check out this clip of our OverDrive autonomy stack piloting an uncrewed Polaris RZR through complex vegetation. The minimap in the lower left shows the traversability estimates of the terrain, computed using only onboard sensing and compute, as the platform races through the environment towards its goal several kilometers away. This is real off-road autonomy: no prior maps, no pre-defined path, no teleoperation. Just realtime (1x) video of high-speed point-to-point navigation using onboard sensing and compute.
