Case Update: Earlier this month, an appeals court ruled that the lawsuit of three Muslim Americans concerning a pattern of discriminatory questioning by U.S. border officers should be reinstated. Represented by the @aclu, the plaintiffs-appellants in this case have achieved a huge victory on behalf of BAMEMSA travelers. Muslim Advocates and a host of civil rights and grassroots organizations submitted an amicus brief in support of the plaintiffs-appellees in February 2024. The brief situates the plaintiffs-appellants’ experiences within the larger, decades-long context of DHS’s biased and discriminatory targeting of BAMEMSA people based on harmful, false, and racialized tropes that wrongly equate Islam with putative dangerousness. We’re thrilled with the decision of the appeals court to allow the plaintiffs-appellants in the case to have their day in court. No one should be discriminatorily targeted by the government, including based on religion or race.

Working to halt bigotry in its tracks.
About us
Muslim Advocates is a national civil rights organization working in the courts, in the halls of power and in communities to halt bigotry in its tracks. We litigate, educate, and advocate to uphold our country’s promise of equal treatment under the law for all Americans — and we get results. We are a big tent organization that recognizes the rich and full diversity of the American Muslim community in race, sex, place of birth, ability, income, education, gender identity, sexual orientation, sect of worship and level of religiosity. We ensure that American Muslims have a seat at the table with expert representation so that all Americans may live free from hate and discrimination.

BREAKING: We joined 50+ immigrants’ rights groups & advocates to send an urgent letter to USCIS today demanding it rescind the Controlled Application Review and Resolution Program - or CARRP. This secretive policy is used to delay and deny aspiring Americans' applications for citizenship or green cards. USCIS’s own records, recently made public, confirm what immigrants and impacted communities have long suspected: discriminatory processing of applications of people from Muslim-majority countries. Click here to take action to urge that CARRP be rescinded: https://lnkd.in/eUjUUBKQ

A week ago, we were joined by supporters, students, artists, and movement leaders for From Renewal to Resistance, an evening of art, community, and solidarity. We arrived with heavy hearts after witnessing a year of genocide in Gaza and an unrelenting domestic crackdown on dissent. But we left feeling renewed for the work ahead. Featuring poetry from Warsan Shire and a photo exhibition from Syed Yaqueen, the power of art inspired us to be resolute in our belief that justice and renewal are possible. We are at a crucial inflection point and we need your support. We are preparing for yet another election of profound consequence for Muslim communities. We will continue to fight to defend the domestic movement in support of Palestinian lives and liberation. Interested in supporting our work? Click here to find ways to give! https://bit.ly/4f3gO32

The U.S. government spends more than $3.4 BILLION a year on the largest immigration detention system in the world to detain and deport people who've lived in our country for decades or who arrived recently just to seek safety or create a better life for their families. Our new snapshot of ICE's detention system dives into new data exposing inhumane treatment and significant public costs, as more taxpayer dollars fund private prison companies profiting off detention contracts. What do prestigious cultural institutions and universities have in common with weapons manufacturers? 🏫 💣 BOARD MEMBERS. Meet the “Genocide Gentry” [jen-uh-sahyd jen-tree] noun: members of the ruling class who hold prestigious positions at cultural and educational institutions despite their connections to warfare amidst an ongoing genocide. New research led by Adalah Justice Project, LittleSis, and the Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) exposes 54 museums, cultural organizations, universities and colleges that currently host these individuals on their boards or in other prominent roles – demonstrating the wide reach and influence that the weapons industry has on our cultural and educational institutions. Visit genocidegentry.org to delve deeper into these connections and see if any of the institutions in your community have connections to the Genocide Gentry.

In partnership with MPower Change, National Immigration Law Center, Asian Law Caucus, CAIR, and the Shoulder 2 Shoulder campaign we celebrate the reintroduction of the National Origin-Based anti-discrimination for Nonimmigrants (“NO BAN”) Act. This bill would close loopholes in immigration law to prevent future presidents from enacting another Muslim or Africa Ban. Banning people because of their faith or country of birth goes against core American aspirations of equality and freedom. This is a critical bill at an even more important moment in our history. Call your representatives today and ask them to vote yes on H.R.9244, the NO BAN Act! Learn more: https://bit.ly/3MBcz2m
