  • As the days grow shorter and cooler, a new school year is just around the corner for many students. Families who maintain open conversations with their teens about health—especially mental health—can play a crucial role in minimizing risky behaviors and promoting well-being. Here are some essential tips from the #CDC to help ensure a successful and healthy school year: 1—Foster Regular Communication: Making time for consistent conversations with your children and teens can significantly enhance their overall health and well-being. 2—Stay Involved: Parents and caregivers who stay informed about their kids' lives and engage in regular check-ins can help create safer and healthier experiences. 3—Prioritize Connection: Building strong connections with your children can lower their risk of mental health issues and other health challenges. Discover more ways to support your child's health at the link below. #BackToSchool #StayConnected

  • We're almost halfway through August and that means the beginning of school is just a few weeks away! This morning, UP Medical Group Pediatrician Amy Slette, MD, joined TV6 & FOX UP to discuss how parents and guardians can best set their children up for a healthy and successful school year. During the interview, Dr. Slette recommended getting kids in to see their primary care provider as soon as possible for their annual well-child visit, making sure they're up to date on immunizations, gradually adjusting their sleep schedule to ease into the school routine, the importance of regular reading and mental health check-ins, and more! • Thank you to these adorable pups, Penny and Maude, and their handlers, Patti and Gwen, of Superiorland Pet Partners, for visiting with our staff and patients recently! They regularly visit our hospital to provide animal-assisted therapy, which not only provides comfort to our patients, but is also proven to lower anxiety levels, increase mobility, provide relief from pain by diverting attention and focus to something positive, and encourage the development of social and behavioral skills in patients of all ages. Penny, Maude and their handlers have gone through many hours of training to provide this volunteer service, and we're very grateful to them! If you see Penny or Maude around, be sure to tell them what good dogs they are (Maude especially enjoys belly rubs). 🐾 #AnimalAssistedTherapy #PetTherapy #UPHSMarquette
