The FDA has given premarket approval for a device that Main Line Health-led clinical trials indicated would reduce the risk of stroke among patients undergoing a procedure to treat cholesterol blockages in the carotid artery. Clinical studies of the Neuroguard IEP system, including the PERFORMANCE I trial and PERFORMANCE II FDA investigational device exemption trial, have consistently recorded no major strokes or neurologic deaths at 30 days post-procedure and robust durability through one year. The 3-in-1 carotid stenting system combines a high-performance, purpose-built stent and an integrated balloon and filter. William Gray MD, System Chief for the Cardiovascular Division and national co-principal investigator of the pivotal PERFORMANCE II trial, said in Endovascular Today: “FDA approval confirms the results of the clinical studies. The innovative Neuroguard IEP system performs exceptionally well with the lowest one-year stroke rates ever shown for any type of carotid revascularization, thereby establishing a new standard of care for meaningfully reducing the risk of procedural and long-term stroke among patients with carotid artery disease.” https://lnkd.in/eNmatKdf
