We proudly celebrate Mary Cheeks, President and General Manager of Jamul Casino, who received the Excellence in Advocacy Award at the 2024 Freedom Fund Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 19. The NAACP San Diego Branch recognized Mary along with other notable community members for their ongoing engagement with their communities and continued efforts to create a space that offers equality for all.   “Mary is a wonderful advocate for the community, and her constant dedication to making a positive impact is nothing short of inspiring. She goes above and beyond to support those around her, always finding ways to uplift others and create opportunities,” said Jamul Indian Village Chairwoman, Erica M. Pinto. “Receiving this award is a reflection of her hard work and passion, and Mary is truly deserving of this honorable recognition.”    The Freedom Fund Dinner honored numerous individuals for their contributions including continuous advocacy, commitment to social equality and furthering community engagement. He sharpened his interpersonal skills and adaptability while serving as a role model in an entry-level leadership position. It’s California Native American Day, a time to honor and celebrate the culture, history, and perseverance of many tribes, including our own Jamul Indian Village. With roots tracing back 12,000 years, the Jamul Indian Village is part of the Kumeyaay people, who thrived in present-day San Diego County and northern Mexico, living with independence and self-sufficiency. Tribal elders share stories of turbulent times following first contact with Europeans, passed down through generations in oral traditions and pictographs. The Kumeyaay referred to Europeans as Guacamal, engaging in trade but ultimately facing relocation to areas like El Cajon, Santee, Jamacha, and Jamul. Today, the principles of tribal independence and self-determination continue to guide the Jamul Indian Village. Through struggle, they have emerged stronger, committed to building a brighter future for generations to come. Let us celebrate their enduring legacy.

🌟Team Member Success Story🌟 After more than 10 years in residential care, Edurne decided in 2022 to explore opportunities in a completely different field. That’s when she joined Jamul Casino as an EVS Attendant on the night shift. Edurne believes in the importance of continuous improvement. After 8 months in the EVS role, she became interested in the Guest Services Cashier position. Encouraged by a fellow team member, she took the leap and applied for the transfer. Reflecting on her interview for the Guest Services Cashier role, Edurne shared, “I felt super nervous, but the interviewer was very kind and made me feel confident about handling the new challenge.” As of September 2024, Edurne has not only maintained perfect attendance but has also excelled as a Guest Services Cashier for over a year. She has a message for her fellow Jamul Casino team members: “In my 2 years with the Jamul Casino family, I’ve learned that we have ample opportunities for growth. The only thing holding us back is our own fears. I encourage you to take that step; you’ll have our full support.
