  • Safe Halloween Treats for Senior Pets: Tips and Ideas for a Spook-Free Season As Halloween approaches, the abundance of sweets and treats can tempt even the most disciplined pet parents. However, finding safe Halloween treats for senior pets matters most to keep your furry friends healthy during the festivities. Below, we share nutritious options and practical tips to keep your senior pet safe this season. Healthy Halloween Treats for Senior Pets Not all Halloween treats suit our senior pets, so choose their snacks wisely. Opt for treats free from added sugars, artificial flavors, and difficult-to-digest ingredients. Above all, select treats that focus on nutrition. Soft and Easy-to-Chew Snacks: Senior pets often have dental concerns, so both crunchy treats and chewy, sticky options can pose a risk. Look for soft, moist treats that are gentle on aging teeth. For instance, pumpkin puree makes a perfect seasonal snack that's easy on their teeth and digestive system. Single-Ingredient Options: Treats with simple ingredients work best. Think pureed pumpkin or baked sweet potato. Avoid both overly complex treats and snacks with multiple unfamiliar ingredients, as these may cause upset stomachs in senior pets. Veterinarian-Approved Treats: Many senior pets require specialized diets due to health concerns. If your pet follows a restricted diet, check with your vet before offering them new Halloween treats. Consequently, you avoid ingredients that may interfere with their health. Ingredients to Avoid When choosing treats, it’s essential to steer clear of ingredients toxic to pets. Common Halloween candies contain chocolate, xylitol, and artificial sweeteners, which are harmful to pets. Chocolate: Chocolate, even in small amounts, can prove fatal for pets. Avoid giving any chocolate or chocolate-flavored treats to your furry friend. Artificial Sweeteners: Xylitol, found in many sugar-free candies, is highly toxic to dogs and cats alike. For this reason, avoid all sugar-free human treats. Dairy and Nuts: Many senior pets struggle with lactose or certain nuts like macadamia, which can be toxic. Also, avoid giving any Halloween candy containing these ingredients. Homemade Treat Options If commercial treats worry you, making safe Halloween treats at home offers another fantastic option. Pumpkin and Oat Biscuits: Mix pumpkin puree with oats to create soft biscuits that are easy for your pet to digest. Sweet Potato Bites: Cut and bake sweet potatoes until soft. This treat is not only nutritious but also tasty for pets! Keep Treat Time Safe and Enjoyable When Halloween night arrives, remember these guidelines to make sure both you and your pet enjoy a worry-free holiday: Avoid the Candy Bowl: Place all human treats out of reach. If visitors bring treats for pets, double-check ingredients before offering any to your senior pet.

  • Heartstrings Pet Hospice Does Not Believe in Non-Compete Agreements Like Other Large Practices At Heartstrings Pet Hospice, we have a fundamental belief that sets us apart from many large national practices. We do not believe in non-compete agreements. While other organizations may bind their employees with restrictive covenants that limit their career options, we prioritize the growth of our team members as both professionals and individuals. We Value Growth Over Restriction: Heartstrings Pet Hospice is comfortable in its own skin. We believe that team members should be given the freedom to evolve and thrive in their careers. Accordingly, we choose to create an environment that promotes this growth rather than stifles it with non-compete clauses. Our mission is built on compassion, dignity, and respect—not just for the families and pets we serve, but also for the talented individuals who make our work possible. Non-Solicitation as an Ethical Alternative: Instead of enforcing non-compete agreements, we offer a non-solicitation agreement. This alternative protects our interests while allowing our team the freedom to explore their professional opportunities. A non-solicitation agreement safeguards our partnerships with vendors and hospitals without limiting an individual’s ability to work elsewhere. This allows us to protect our business relationships while fostering a culture of trust and collaboration within our team. A Model Built on Compassion and Respect: Heartstrings works hard every day to develop a true business model that reflects the values we hold dear: compassion, dignity, and respect. Not only do we serve the families and pets who rely on us, but we also extend these values to our team members. Our approach fosters an environment where each person is free to grow, learn, and become the best version of themselves, without the fear of restrictive contractual obligations. Why Choose Heartstrings Pet Hospice? Above all, our model of care and business practices creates a supportive atmosphere for everyone involved. When you choose Heartstrings, you’re choosing a team that values both its employees and its clients equally. We understand that the key to success lies in empowering our team to grow freely while ensuring that the interests of our company are ethically protected. Join Heartstrings and See the Difference: If you’re considering a career in the pet hospice field or are looking for a compassionate provider for your pet’s end-of-life care, Heartstrings Pet Hospice stands out from the rest. Our unique approach to career growth and team member respect makes us different from the large national practices. We encourage you to check us out and see why Heartstrings is better—both for the pets and families we care for, and for the professionals we work with every day.

  • Transparency in Pricing: Heartstrings Pet Hospice’s Commitment to Compassion and Respect At Heartstrings Pet Hospice, we believe that end-of-life care for your pet should be a time for love and compassion, not stress over unexpected costs. We treat every family with compassion, dignity, and respect, and this philosophy extends to the way we approach pricing. Many practices may lure you in with what appears to be a low price, but then pile on hidden fees that only add to the emotional and financial burden. We don't operate that way. Straightforward Pricing, No Hidden Fees: One of the most frustrating experiences pet owners face is being drawn to a seemingly affordable service, only to realize later that what they were quoted only covers the appointment booking. Additional costs, like a “platform fee” for booking through a website or excessive travel fees, can surprise families when they are already navigating a difficult time. It’s not uncommon for travel fees alone to exceed $150 per appointment. Perhaps the worst scenario is charging for sentimental keepsakes. In many cases, families are asked to pay $50 or more for something as simple as a clay paw print—a cherished keepsake that, at Heartstrings, we believe should be complimentary. At Heartstrings Pet Hospice, our pricing is transparent from the start. We offer all-inclusive packages so you know exactly what to expect. Above all, we promise never to bait and switch. The price we quote covers the full extent of the care we provide, and there are no surprise fees. Heartstrings’ 24/7 Family Text Line for Unmatched Support: Communication is key during difficult times, and we go above and beyond to make sure you have access to support whenever you need it. We provide every family we serve with access to our 24/7 family text line. Whether you need advice, reassurance, or just someone to talk to, we’re here for you. Our team is committed to being straightforward, not only in pricing but in every interaction. We walk alongside you during one of the most emotional experiences you may face, offering clear guidance and compassion every step of the way. Why Transparency Matters All too often, pet owners face heartache not only from the loss of their beloved pets but from unexpected financial burdens. Transparency is essential because it allows families to focus on what truly matters—their pet’s comfort and their own peace of mind. We never want you to feel like you’ve been misled or taken advantage of. Many other practices may offer a low price at first glance but fail to mention the numerous fees added later. These practices may charge high fees for travel, hidden platform fees, or charge for keepsakes like paw prints, which we believe should always be part of a compassionate service. At Heartstrings Pet Hospice, our goal is simple: to provide clear, upfront pricing so you can make informed decisions.

  • We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Katrina Knepler to the Heartstrings Pet Hospice team in Denver! Dr. Knepler has always had a profound connection with animals, having grown up on a small suburban farm surrounded by a variety of beloved pets, including horses, dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, a potbellied pig, and even a raccoon. Her passion for veterinary medicine was ignited at a young age, as she helped care for injured wildlife with the support of her parents. This early experience led her to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, and after graduating from vet school in 2002, she made Colorado her home. Dr. Knepler and her family love the outdoors, enjoying skiing, camping, fishing, and taking annual trips to Florida for deep-sea fishing. Her home is full of love and energy, with two dogs—a Cane Corso and a Saint Bernard puppy—four chickens, a guinea pig, and a mischievous cat. Dr. Knepler’s family is also actively involved in 4-H, and she volunteers as a soccer coach, bringing her passion for the sport to the local community. In her downtime, Dr. Knepler enjoys reading and spending quality time with her pets. She also has a love for fall, with "October" being her favorite color, and she adores all things Halloween. We are excited to have Dr. Knepler’s compassionate care and deep commitment to both animals and their families on our team. Please join us in welcoming her to Heartstrings!
