Co-educational day and boarding school for Kindergarten through Grade 9 in Southborough, Massachusetts

About us

Fay School was founded in 1866 and was the first junior boarding school in the United States. Our 63-acre campus is located in Southborough, MA, just 25 miles from Boston. Our community includes 475 students in kindergarten through grade nine. Of those, 150 students are boarders who come from across the United States and more than 25 countries. We are proud of our authentically diverse and multicultural community. Fay is recognized around the world for its superior educational program, and our graduates are accepted to top secondary schools, including Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Academy Andover, Deerfield Academy, and Groton School. In addition to the core courses of mathematics, science, English, and history, students take art, music, and world languages. Students also focus on the design thinking process with courses in our 3,000 square-foot Innovation Lab. Community members embrace our five core values - Academic Excellence, Honorable Conduct, Dedicated Service, Earnest Effort, and Wellness of Mind, Body, and Spirit - and our school motto, Poteris Modo Velis (“You can if you will”) highlights our community's emphasis on determination, effort, and resilience. While the School has grown and evolved since its founding in 1866, our central purpose has remained constant: we provide our students with the foundation for a meaningful life. Fay's program empowers students to discover their talents, develop their intellectual abilities, establish essential academic skills and knowledge, and define their moral character - all essential to living a life of meaning and making a positive difference in the world.

Latin 2A students have been learning about stoicism, the Roman philosophy of life that emphasized reason and self-control as fundamental to living a moral life. Latin teacher Dan Blanchard asked his students to create a piece of street art that visually depicts a quote from a stoic philosopher. Through the use of imagery and design, Dan challenged his students to convey the philosopher's message in a way that would allow anyone to understand the meaning. Throughout the year, students will focus on different philosophical schools of thought and their impact on Roman culture.

Kindergarten students continued their study of the five senses by adding a sensory garden to the pollinator plantings in the Primary School Garden this week. Director of Grounds Mike Casey gave students a lesson in planting and students took turns planting Echinacea, Irish Moss, Lavender, and Lamb's Ear. They sketched the flowers and leaves, making note of how the different parts of the plants feel as well as the sounds and smells of the garden.

Second graders led last week's Primary Morning Meeting as they explained the meaning behind Fay's Core Values and shared skits demonstrating what each looks like in daily life. Students showed that Academic Excellence means checking your work and sharing ideas; Earnest Effort is persistence that eventually pays off; Honorable Conduct is doing the right thing even when nobody is looking; Dedicated Service is taking the opportunity to help others; and Wellness of Mind, Body, and Spirit means taking time to reflect and take care of yourself. Special guest Mortimer the Moose joined the meeting to learn the unique hand motions that help Primary School students connect to each core value's meaning.
