🌍 Reducing methane emissions in dairy #farming is essential for a sustainable future, and we are proud to be part of the solution! In collaboration with the University of California, Davis, Hawassa University, and the Global Methane Hub, we’re working on a Feed Ration Formulation (FRF) tool that optimizes dairy feed for cost, nutrition, and lower emissions. We recently piloted this tool with Ethiopian #farmers, who liked its simplicity and potential to boost productivity. As we expand to India, Kenya, and beyond, this tool will empower farmers to adopt sustainable practices that are better for our #climate and planet. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gEDTVQqa

Creating a world where farmers use technology and data to build prosperous communities.
About us
Digital Green is a global development organization working to create a world where farmers use technology and data to build prosperous communities. We join forces with governments, private agencies and, most importantly, rural communities themselves to co-create digital solutions that are of the community and for the community. When farmers have the tools they need to connect with one another, they’re far more likely to apply what they’ve learned on their farms and in their households – improving their own livelihoods and those of others in their community in a manner that’s nutrition-sensitive, climate-resilient, and inclusive.

🎉 We're excited to announce the successful conclusion of our FRAME project (Fostering Resilience in Agriculture through MRV Experimentation) in Bihar, India! Together with JEEVIKA, Rural Development Department, Government of Bihar, Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition , Environmental Defense Fund, and FAIR Forward, we reached over 300k farmers to enhance #climate resilience through sustainable practices and worked with over 24,000 farmers on data-driven decision-making. Key highlights: 🔑 92% early rice transplantation in 2023 🔑 Optimized nitrogen use for wheat and rice farmers 🔑 #AI-driven yield predictions via the Zindi Africa challenge The project also developed a scalable data collection model for JEEViKA’s frontline workers, integrating digital tools and geofencing, and empowered farmers with personalized climate-smart advice through Farmer Scorecards. We learned that while machine learning models show great promise, further validation with larger datasets is key for wider application. Co-funded by FAIR Forward (a project of Indo-German Development Cooperation, this project has set the stage for our upcoming Zero Hunger Zero Carbon Project, which will expand into livestock management and regenerative energy practices. 🌱 Smallholder #farmers—nearly 500 million globally—play a critical role in food security, yet they often lack timely, accurate agricultural advice due to limited extension services, especially in regions like Kenya, India, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. 📲 Recognizing this challenge, we partnered with CGIAR to create Farmer.Chat: an #AI-powered platform that acts as a digital extension agent. From real-time weather updates to market insights, Farmer.Chat’s smart design ensures farmers get the support they need, right at their fingertips. 🌟 Farmer.Chat uses the innovative LLM-as-a-Judge framework, co-developed with Hugging Face to ensure responses are accurate, relevant, and tailored to each farmer's needs. Already supporting 20,000 farmers daily, it has already answered over 300,000 queries in six languages! ➡️ Our own Vineet Singh, along with Rajsekar Manokaran and Aymeric Roucher wrote a blog post to describe how Farmer.Chat works, especially the LLM-as-a-judge system. We’re excited to be featured as one of the eight powerful examples of #ResponsibleAI in action, spanning sectors like agriculture, health, education, and human rights in a new report by Caribou Digital, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Explore the case studies, including Farmer.Chat, our AI-powered digital assistant for agricultural extension👉 https://bit.ly/3TXfaYN These are three responsible practices in #AI for development highlighted in the report: 👉Do no harm. Many of the organizations are taking it slow and integrating AI with strict oversight. 👉Keep humans in the loop. Ensure AI doesn’t operate without human guidance for quality assurance purposes. 👉Pursue fairness and inclusivity by reducing possible biases while using AI tools, by using and refining open source tools AI, and by sharing findings with the AI4D community of practice. #AI4D #AIForDevelopment #SustainableDevelopment Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D)
