Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

About us

Communities In Schools of Washington is part of the nation's largest and most effective organization dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed in life. In Washington state, we operate as a network of 11 local, independent affiliates serving over 80,000 students in 9 counties and 26 school districts. Our affiliates work closely with schools, social services, businesses and volunteers in their communities to connect young people with the resources they need to learn and grow: mentors and tutors, after-school care, family services, health care, food, clothing, school supplies and more so they can focus on learning. As part of a community that cares for students, we believe that kids can overcome barriers and develop plans for a bright future. The state office of Communities In Schools of Washington strengthens the network by providing affiliates with support in operations, service delivery, local resource development, and public relations and marketing. In partnership with our affiliate network, our goal is to reach the greatest number of students possible with the highest quality of support services.

Learner & Leader | Social Worker | Vice President, Learning & Practice

These learning leaders represent the 17-member Communities In Schools National Office #Learning & #Practice Steering Committee. They hold varying roles in leading the learning, development, data quality, and organizational supports for 2,800 schools, 100+ CIS organizations, and 13 states where Communities In Schools #SiteCoordinators implement our evidence-based #IntegratedStudentSupport model. We meet monthly through virtual connections and annually in-person to gather their insights on our national learning strategies, ask for their expertise in designing #resources, #LearningSolutions, and experiences that will provide meaning to their networks of practitioners. And, as is core to our mission at Communities In Schools, it is critical that we build #relationships with one another to do this work well. This year, we convened for our 1 1/2 day meeting at the CIS National Office and as a part of our time together we asked each member to share their “why” for this work - what keeps them here, focused, determined, and engaged in quality learning and implementation within their networks? To a person, we each summed up some version of this sentiment: A common belief that #education can be the great #equalizer. It may be an aspiration today, but it is an aspiration that drives these learning leaders to stay in the work, contribute their brilliance to the Communities In Schools National Office mission, and stay focused on what matters: working within, through, and sometimes around the systems that keep kids from accessing their full potential. It’s a battle worth fighting and these folks are geared up for whatever it takes! (Including a duct tape solution to get our annual photo together! 😂)
