About us

Founded in 1899, Anti-Cruelty is Chicago’s oldest and largest, private, open-admission, unlimited stay humane society. With a mission of building a community of caring by helping pets and educating people, our comprehensive programs and services help over 50,000 animals and humans every year and include: adoption, charity veterinary clinic, low or no-cost spay/neuter clinic, cruelty investigations and rescue, humane education & community outreach, a free behavior helpline, dog training classes, S.A.F.E. program (short-term accommodations for emergencies), The Bruckner Rehabilitation & Treatment Center, the Virginia Butts Berger Cat Clinic, and the Dog Rehabilitation Center.     We’re thrilled to be a PetSmart Charities grantee! Grant funds go directly toward helping pets and those who love them through the support of vital transports! Most recently, we stepped in to help southern shelters in crisis following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Thanks to your donations PetSmart stores, we’re able to make an even bigger difference for families with pets far and wide.

    🐾 Thanks fur for a fun paw-ty, Chicago Bulls! 🐾 We had a blast at the puppy party hosted for their staff as part of their Wellness Month! 🐶🎉 We were happy to give them a break with our bewitching puppies, Hermione, Ginny, Luna, & Molly. Their team had a spellbinding time with the adorable pups, and it was a great way to unwind and relax. We're happy to have created such a memorable experience with the Chicago Bulls! 🏀❤️

    In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, Anti-Cruelty stepped in to help southern shelters in crisis. Yesterday we welcomed 25 dogs from shelters in Pasco County, Florida, who are struggling to accommodate displaced animals following the storm. Fosters are urgently needed to open their homes to these dogs as we continue to face overcapacity. Learn more by visiting www.anticruelty.org/foster. This deep bond raises our expectations for their care—and veterinarians are at the heart of this.   In our latest Shared Table newsletter, I sat down at Anti-Cruelty, with Dr. Emily Swiniarski, Medical Director of the Anti-Cruelty and Dr. Amanda Schnitker, Hospital Director at Companion Animal Hospital River North and Uptown Animal Hospital, both part of Uptown Animal Hospital, INC.   Their journeys into veterinary medicine reveal a deep commitment not just to animals but to the people who love them. We touched on the ongoing challenges facing veterinarians today—amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. From compassion fatigue to staff shortages and evolving care models, the struggle is real.     🐾 Thanks fur everything, Hilton Hotel! 🐾 We had an absolutely pawsome time at the puppy party hosted for their staff on Wednesday! 🐶🎉 It's hard work being in the hospitality business, so we wanted to give them a break with our rambunctious puppies, Zyla, Zya, and Zola. Their team loved every moment spent with the adorable pups, and it was a fantastic way to unwind and bond. Thank you, Hilton Hotel, for creating such a memorable experience! 🏨❤️
