Legal Advocacy for Immigrant Survivors
About us
American Gateways is a Central Texas non-profit organization that provides immigration legal services and education to secure justice for new Americans and enrich Central Texas communities. https://linktr.ee/American_Gateways Our mission is to champion the dignity and human rights of immigrants, refugees and survivors of persecution, torture, conflict and human trafficking through exceptional immigration legal services at no or low cost, education and advocacy. Founded in 1987 as the Political Asylum Project of Austin (PAPA), American Gateways began as a response to the legal needs of the large number of Central American refugees arriving at the Texas border in the 1980s. Like the thousands of others American Gateways has helped through the years, these refugees were fleeing violence and war in their home countries in search of a safe haven. American Gateways offers safety and hope for a new life to hundreds of men, women and children every year, from approximately 75 countries around the world. Today, immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers continue to benefit from legal representation—and so much more. American Gateways empowers immigrants to advocate for themselves and their families and keeps them informed about their rights and responsibilities. American Gateways educates law enforcement, the legal community, and other advocates on how to use social and legal resources to uphold the law and make Central Texas a safe place to build a new life.

Whether you’re a DACA recipient or an ally, now is the time to take action. We have kept DACA alive and protected our people against every baseless and calculated attack against our lives. We’re not stopping now. We must take a bold, public stance to unapologetically declare immigrants belong here and demand the 5th Circuit Court protect American families by upholding DACA. Text HOME IS HERE to 787-57 and tell Congress to deliver a pathway to citizenship and protect immigrants now!

“There’s a lack of legal representation for immigrants in removal proceedings and in other proceedings as well,” said Edna Yang, co-executive director of American Gateways Fortunately, this fund will soon begin helping immigrants facing deportation or who are at risk of losing their legal immigration status. Unlike people in civil court proceedings, immigrants in deportation hearings are not provided with free court-appointed attorneys. This strengthened legal defense fund will provide fair and accessible legal representation to ensure that people's right to due process is protected and will help prevent needless family separation and detention.
