We were successful in relocating division headquarters by keeping communication lines open with our team members. We offered team members the opportunity to travel to the new location with their spouse or significant other to see the new location. That trip included meeting with a realtor. We were generous with relocation assistance. We also took good care of those team members who could not make the move (i.e. stay bonuses and severance).

In one of these projects, I saw that the accounting department had issues that they would be in an open floor plan beside the Tech department and were concerned about the noise the IT dept would make. By making a small change in where they were located provided a small barrier based on the shape of the building.

As an authentic leader, this is the time for you to show HOW MUCH you trust & respect their decisions on ensuring their work is not disrupted. 1. Don't micromanage where you display a leadership style that is controlling & overly critical. You need to see the wood for the trees. 2. Be nice. Your employees need time to adjust to the new location. They may be trying out their commute time from home & back. Give them space to figure that out. 3. Deal with exceptions. If there are genuine cases where commuting takes too much time, allow them to work from home, & join monthly physical team meetings to preserve team camaraderie.

Relocation should only be about change of location- not culture or values. Yes, relocating is difficult but a company which fosters good culture, values, and an overall supportive environment for the employees is likely to gain trust from them. Offer help where needed- this may be relocation assistance of flexibility in working schedules.

I worked for a company that planned to move their smaller corporate office to a larger town an hour away. If individuals chose, there was help from HR to move them to the manufacturing plants in the existing town. Daily shuttles were set up where multiple private buses would be available a few times a day with Wifi on the bus. Transportation costs would be covered 100% the first year, 50% the second year.
