In my experience it is important to know who you are presenting to and to present quality material. I recently invested in a professional photo shoot showcasing my work AND a personal brand photoshoot and feel confident in displaying my work. I believe that drawing attention to the details of your work is also important. For example, instead of just showing a finished vanity in a bathroom, show the stages of design that it took to get to that point. Show your design sketches and the builder at work AND then show the finished product. It's important to showcase your attention to detail. Portfolios should be clean and neat and answer all the questions.

It is also important to sell the story of your projects in clear and concise terms with pictures and sketches of the various stages of your involvement with such projects. Think of work scale, project type, geographic region, and skill range. It's OK if you don't cover all the employer wants, and only show the relevant parts in your experience. Also if you feel uncomfortable with your sorting or worried they will ask for more, you can have a small backup folder you can pull out in case the interview asks for more.
