What are the key trends and emerging issues in ESG education and training for sustainability professionals?

The breadth of the ESG role requires a different approach. Technical knowledge should be sound but other key skills such as facilitation, negotiation, prioritisation, project management and evaluation, risk mgt are all key. Top of my list would be building business cases and dealing with conflicting priorities. With all the technical knowledge in the world, ESG measures will struggle without the skills to get buy in and engage wider and wider parts of the organisation.

The ability of organisations to apply a systems-based approach to sustainability initiatives is vital, otherwise environmental impacts will simply be translocated. This means seeing and understanding the big picture and identifying a holistic set of actions which colleagues across the whole organisation can buy into. Increasingly, sustainability is a feature of all roles, and one of the trends we are seeing as an executive education provider is a recognition that all colleagues need an understanding of environmental issues and the confidence to discuss these with their supply chain and clients - not just 'sustainability' professionals!

Often educational resources in the ESG space can be too high level, focusing less on practical skills to actually execute. Example: We often read “ESG professionals need to be great at building a business case” - but often it’s not easy to upskill in what an influential business case involves, the boring spreadsheet stuff, the modelling, robust scenario analysis, connecting numbers and narrative etc I think we’ll start to see education tailored to various professionals who are responsible for embedding this work in their day to day. The course an auditor or accountant needs on carbon accounting for example is different to a supplier manager in procurement, done right this kind of education unlocks confidence to take real action.

Biodiversity reporting. For too long we have had carbon tunnel vision and we are now realizing that we need to take care and regenerate our biomes if we ever want to truly obtain sustainability and a healthy natural environment.

One of the key emerging trends that is being seen in the market is more specific ESG training. It is no longer enough to have a sustainability certificate from a the top universities. At the mid to senior level, the focus is very much on issue-specific skillset: biodiversity, negative emissions tech, decarbonization, carbon markets, etc. Part of the reason for this shift is the increasingly specific job openings in the market. While it is important to have a base-level understanding of key topics, differentiating yourself requires: 1. Understanding of strategic and financial implications of ESG 2. Mastery of atleast one specific ESG issue 3. Complete view of how the market and regulations are evolving for that specific issue

One of the challenges of ESG is the voluntary self-determined objectives that lead to its criticism of being a tick & flick exercise. As ESG moves to mandatory financial disclosure reporting, it becomes critical for business to understand authentic sustainability and how their activities impact deeply across all E - S - G aspects. Few companies are brave enough - yet - to delve this deeply. It behoves sustainability professionals to lead, guide and support authentic sustainability through mandatory reporting. IFRS and EFDR are here and it is just the beginning. Getting on top of this early will separate companies into those who continue to have the social licence to operate, and those who do not.

The rapidly evolving ESG landscape poses a challenge to make upto date training materials. This can be addressed by developing a process to regularly update training content. As well as encouraging continuous learning whilst providing resources to stay informed. Balancing global ESG standards with local contextual variations can be challenging. You can provide region specific case studies and examples to enhance clarity and also promote consideration of the local impact of global ESG principles.

The role of sustainability professionals is largely to communicate, inspire, persuade, cajole others to see the risks of inaction and the opportunities of early and determined action.

Keeping abreast of emerging issues, such as climate adaptation strategies, social impact measurement methodologies, or ethical AI integration, is vital. Additionally, understanding regional nuances, industry-specific ESG practices, and the impact of global events on sustainability trends enriches the holistic view of ESG education for professionals. Self-care is important for you to make a difference in this field in the long run. ESG challenges are weighty and don't lend themselves to nine-to-five roles from which you can easily switch off at the end of the day. There can be no environmental and social sustainability without personal sustainability!

Measurement, particularly data gathering across all aspects of business activities, will become critical as mandatory financial disclosure becomes embedded. Businesses will need to understand all areas of impact and be able to prove mitigation against thresholds. This is going to spin off new service industries and specialists who can support all types of businesses achieve transparency.
