Here's how you can effectively influence and persuade your boss.

Take time to understand your boss's priorities, values, and concerns. Tailor your approach and messaging to align with their perspective. Demonstrate reliability, competence, and integrity in your work. Build a strong professional relationship based on trust and mutual respect. Gather relevant data, facts, and evidence to support your proposal or idea. Anticipate potential objections and prepare compelling arguments to address them.

Clearly articulate how your proposal will benefit the organization, aligning it with strategic goals, improving efficiency, reducing costs, or enhancing performance. Use clear and concise language to convey your ideas. Tailor your communication style to your boss's preferences, whether they prefer formal presentations, informal discussions, or written proposals.

Building a relationship of trust with your boss involves fostering a solid working relationship grounded in mutual respect and reliability. Be consistently honest and transparent in all your communications, ensuring that you convey information accurately and openly. Show your dedication to the team's success by consistently delivering on your commitments, supporting your colleagues, and going above and beyond when necessary. It's funny how our brain resembles a computer in many ways. If you write the right input, you get the right output. For example, the right output is to onboard your boss with your ideas, then address the right inputs and provide. It could be comparisons between vendors, last year's financial report, expert advice, or scientific findings.

For me, the most important qualities are honesty, commitment, hard work, and delivery on committed time, as these traits build trust. Additionally, ensuring clear transparency is crucial. These qualities help establish long-term relationships with your boss, even after transitioning to other organizations.

We often focus solely on our immediate boss, overlooking the influence of other department heads and senior management. In today’s collaborative work environment, it’s crucial to expand our perspective beyond those who directly impact our appraisals. To advance quickly, our efforts must transcend traditional command lines. Engage with professionals in different areas and adapt to environments outside our comfort zone. This broadens our network, demonstrates our versatility, and highlights our proactive approach. Remember, it’s unlikely you’ll have the same boss forever. Stay humble and open-minded, as anyone you interact with could become pivotal in your career journey. 

If it is not critical to decide immediately, provide input in such a way that your boss can consider the situation and suggestion without having to accept or reject the idea immediately. Then consider what concerns they voice and bring the suggestion up again after they have had time to think about it. Sometimes all of us, bosses included, need time to process and evaluate ideas, or otherwise get used to them.
