As landscape architects and professionals, we excel at prioritizing tasks, but we often struggle with prioritizing and simplifying our communications, especially in urgent emails. The critical information can easily get lost amidst the volume of details, affecting everyone from junior staff conveying multiple tasks to supervisors managing numerous project timelines, and even senior principals discussing budget adjustment or design changes with clients. Clear and concise communication is essential at all levels to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in our projects. Hence, don’t just prioritize tasks; prioritize communication.

Define the project scope, objectives, and deliverables upfront with the landscape architects. Prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency to ensure everyone understands what needs to be accomplished. Develop a project schedule that outlines key milestones, deadlines for deliverables, and dependencies between tasks. Break down the work into manageable phases with specific timelines for each.

Assign tasks to team members and clearly communicate roles and responsibilities. Ensure that each person understands their part in the project and what is expected from them.Utilize project management software or tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project to track tasks, deadlines, and progress. A common misconception is treating landscape architecture as an afterthought, like adding icing to a cake. This approach is flawed. When planning fails to consider landscape needs, such as crane space, sufficient soil depth for trees, or worker access, expecting landscape works to fix these is unrealistic. Landscape design must be integrated into design process and project management from the outset. This allows us to understand impacts and address challenges early. Tight timelines require prioritization, but landscape architecture shouldn’t be last. Prioritizing it from the beginning helps manage constraints, anticipate impacts, and safeguard projects from climate risks. We must recognize its importance in upstream planning. 

Procurement of the plant list and availability of specified sizes needs to be prioritised early on and delivery of plant materials needs to be timed so that you don't have to create a nursery on site if there are weather or construction delays.
