- Inventory Surplus or shortage can happen only due to these reasons. 1. System Error. 2. Error while operating billing, IN/OUT of the inventory. 3. Customer or Staff theft. For system error make sure to train your staff well, If possible arrange a staff to recheck In/out activities by a second person for confirmation. For Theft- make sure to supervise daily physical count & match with the System Counts. Staff will be more responsible towards the inventory if this exercise will be done on regular basis.

I think regular staff training to implement best practices along with double check / verification of stock by 2 persons may mitigate the risk of inventory discrepancy. Moreover Barcode system is also preferred for inventory accuracy.

To expand more on the training, the inventory manager needs to understand the root cause of why the Stocktakers are getting it wrong. It could be due to the misunderstanding of the UoM etc. Once this is established, this could be a starting point to mentor the team as different SKUs are counted differently.
