Your team is resistant to sustainable changes. How can you break through their comfort with the status quo?
Introducing sustainable practices can meet with resistance, but a thoughtful approach can change minds. To break through the status quo:
- Demonstrate the value: Show how sustainability benefits not just the environment, but also the bottom line.
- Engage and educate: Involve your team in learning sessions that highlight the importance of sustainable changes.
- Lead by example: Implement small, consistent sustainable actions yourself to inspire your team.

Introducing sustainable practices can meet resistance, but a thoughtful approach can shift perspectives. Start by educating stakeholders on the benefits and aligning sustainability with organizational goals. Engage key players early, addressing concerns and demonstrating how these practices meet their needs. Showcase success stories and implement pilot programs to provide tangible proof of concept. Continuous communication and celebrating small wins help build momentum, while offering incentives underscores the value of sustainability. This approach gradually breaks through the status quo, fostering a more receptive environment for lasting change.

An example was when I was tasked with handling my very first sustainability project. I could not have envisaged the magnitude of such resistance across the board. It took several weeks of back and forth engagement and education to eventually gain buy-in from key stakeholders. In the end, we recorded significant savings in operational cost and reduced our annual footprint by over 10%. So I couldn't agree more with educating stakeholders on the values of sustainability to the business and the environment. Regular communication, leadership by example, and personnel recognition are a few of the tactics I employed at the time and they worked successfully.

To break through your team's resistance to sustainable changes, consider the following strategies: -Provide comprehensive information about the benefits of green practices, especially how these changes can positively impact their roles -Encourage your team to participate in planning and implementing sustainable changes. This involvement foster a sense of ownership and responsibility -Offer rewards for achieving sustainability milestones. This can motivate the team by providing tangible targets to work towards -Lead by Example: Leaders who practice what they preach inspire their teams to follow suit. -Openly discuss and address any fear that the team may have. This help alleviate resistance by ensuring everyone feels heard and valued.

Breach the gap: if you introduce Sustainability as a standalone vertical, you will fail. Key to any transformation is to link the existing to the to-be, creating a path for staff's engagement. An example of this is Decarbonization of the Shipping industry (2% of world's GHG emissions): if you present CO2 emissions as a new KPI, to prioritize among the other dozens, how can you expect successful execution ? However, to explain that CO2 is nothing but Fuel burned x 3 (yes, varying factors depending on fuel used). Suddenly, you enable staff to realize this is not a new isolated obscure KPI to drive, but they can drive it through Fuel reduction or Fuel type selection ! SHAZAM !
