When we run sustainability scans for companies there are 4 consistent challenges: 1 - Time. Employees have other responsibilities and sustainability is not high enough on their agenda 2 - Knowledge. People don't feel they've got the skills to take sustainable actions. 3 - Cost. A perception that sustainability costs more. 4- Influence. Many people just don't feel that making a change is in their remit. The good news is that there are engagement strategies to overcome each one of these challenges.

If you are not transparent and accountable internally, then you will not develop trust with your employees and this will start to seep into external communications. You are essentially telling them that what they've learnt and how they've been successful in their career so far is no longer relevant. They can find that hard and resist change.

Every organizations should have good ERG's (Employee Resource Groups) across different social streams and they must have good area wise chapters in each country. Chapter leads must get connected with the local team members by making use of their internal media channels , podcasts, share point sites. This will help them to organize & coordinate events, sharing good life stye practices, habit building which ensures a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being of all their org family members, be equally connecting with the Global ERG leaders.

Never underestimate the power of the collective. The greatest influencer of behaviour change is peer pressure, so in order to normalise more sustainable behaviours, the more employees that demonstrate them, the more others will follow. Change mindset first, through training, then support and reward through nudges. If you get it right, your employees will soon be doing the sustainability advocacy work for you!
