I think one angle where this might be helpful is when corporations conduct materiality analysis. There needs to be a lot of thinking that goes through in the process of facilitating dialogues with key stakeholders and getting them to share and evaluate what’s important and what’s not on the priority list. It’s tricky because on one hand you need to create a safe space for the participants on the other hand the interviewer should not be seen as influencing the outcomes of the discussion.

Stakeholder dialogue is important from a sustainability perspective if you want to have a better sustainability strategy, first, you need to understand the needs and expectations of the stakeholders. Stakeholders' engagement through such dialogues can help you in your various sustainability challenges.

I think stakeholder dialogue may also be referred to as stakeholder engagement in certain areas. I would prefer to call it that, vs. dialogue, which implies a conversation, which, as this article points out, is one of the ways corporations can receive input from interested stakeholders. Secondly, I don`t believe it is necessary to only look for common grounds. As some of the comments allude to, the concept of double materiality implies that there are sustainability issues that will be important or significant to a subset of stakeholders and should also be considered even though it may not represent common ground per say.

When measuring stakeholder dialogue, there are various dimensions and indicators to consider depending on the purpose, scope, and context of the dialogue process. Input refers to the resources and conditions that enable the dialogue process, such as budget, time, stakeholders, information, and facilitation. Process describes the activities and interactions that take place during the dialogue process, such as methods, communication, participation, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Output focuses on the immediate products and results of the dialogue process, such as agreements, recommendations, action plans, and reports. Outcome looks at the short-term and medium-term effects and changes that result from the dialogue process, such as learning, trust, influence, and behavior change. Lastly, impact is concerned with the long-term and broader effects and changes that result from the dialogue process, such as policy change, social change, and environmental change.

These aspects are good measurements. Another very important measure is consistency of engagement. It should not be a once and done approach, but stakeholder engagement is most effective when it is consistent and over a long period of time. Through the good and bad times.

Lastly, utilization speaks to the difficulty of ensuring the measurement results are used and valued by stakeholders and decision-makers.

I think stakeholder dialogue or engagement is critical but very hard to do well. This is definitely one area where the field of sustainability could benefit from developing further, providing practical guidance, learning from others. If anyone knows of good courses in this are it would be great to hear.
