Informatics is old enough to find mentors and yet new enough to be filled with pretty obvious gaps that anyone with the gumption and drive can begin filling. Ask, listen, collaborate, listen, collaborate, ask, collaborate, ask, listen... Connections are the key (it took me a long time to figure that out)

Get involved in your department by becoming a superuser. You gain the knowledge, become the resource for your peers, and network with other teams throughout your site.

Experience is key. It provides you with a base to speak from. You are more likely to be listened to and influence if you speak from a perspective of one who has experience in the subject matter.

Continuing education is vital in healthcare informatics due to the rapid pace of technological advancements. Consider pursuing relevant certifications or degrees that can bolster your expertise. For example, a certification in Health Information Management (HIM) or a Master's degree in Health Informatics could significantly enhance your credentials. Attend as many conferences as possible covering the topic as well as smaller meetings which cover associated or contributory factors related to the major topic

There is a thought that digital technology is a solution to healthcare. It is not! It is a servant to healthcare. If the overall healthcare strategy is wrong then digital technology can be a real waste of money. Healthcare is changing - now 3 pillars: health, wellness, social interaction. It starts with where and how we live. This is multisectoral, beyond the remit of a single Ministry or organisation. So who seeks digital technology and why. Be sure that the strategy creates the platform that briefs the needs of digital technology.

Make it a practice to step back and take a critical look at the big picture. How will technology you are considering today affect your workflow in the future. Select mature products and develop processes that integrate with technologies you have already in place or are on the launching pad. Concentrate on improving integration with downstream systems and vendors. You will maximize your return on investment and value to the organization.
