What are the benefits of aligning your strategy with your vision and mission?

In my experience, aligning strategy with vision and mission brings clarity and direction to the entire organisation, ensuring that all efforts are focused on common goals. For example, when I worked for a company that aligned its strategy with a vision centred on sustainability and a mission to make a positive impact on the community, all departments understood how their work contributed to these shared goals, resulting in greater engagement and organisational cohesion.

A company's mission statement, vision statement, and core values need to be aligned to provide for consistent strategic direction. The mission outlines the fundamental purpose of the company. The vision is the company's aspiration for the future. The core values are the guiding principles that shape company culture. This then rallies the employees to a unifying identity. Both strategic direction and the heart and soul of the organization are strengthened.

This helps in aligning the goals, actions and energy in same direction and brings a focus to the all the activities. Clear communication of the vision and mission, its understanding and acceptance by all the authority & responsibility holders is crucial for achievement of the same.

Question: Can you clearly articulate in your own mind the vision of where you want to be, the reasons why people should be interested, the way in which you will operate (ethically, sustainably, customer centric....)? Question: Can you communicate this to me right now as if you were a contestant on Dragons Den? If the answer is no to both questions you need to book some time out with your team and your customer. In short: Vision = lofty, inspirational Mission = clear, purposeful, gives the organization an identity. Two notable challenges with this are: 1. Being "self" aware 2. Keeping it simple It can often help to bring on external perspectives to help you define this through frameworks/exercises. Consultants may be good fit if you need additional input.

Mission Statement: A mission statement answers "Why are we here?" and "What do we do for whom?" Keep it simple and clear. Involve your team, community, and stakeholders to find a purpose that resonates widely. A good mission statement should be short, inspiring, and reflect your organization's core purpose. Vision Statement: A vision statement builds on your mission, describing the future you aim to create. It answers "What will the world look like if we succeed?" Make it aspirational and forward-looking. Your vision should inspire and guide your long-term goals and decision-making.

Many techniques--what works for you is the best. I see the vision as the short, memorable, overall summary of what success looks like--what your goal is--what you are aiming at overall, long-term: - Quality is Job 1. - Get to 'Yes,' the right way. - We sell cars honestly. - Integrity is our biggest asset. Mission is what you do to achieve success, and what success looks like. If you can't describe success, then it's simply luck if you get there! - We move from R&D, refine the product for mass production, strategic distribution, and worldwide sales, to sell 1M units more each year. If you haven't done this as a team, see what your leadership and working groups think. Accept feedback. Is it possible? If unlikely, reimagine it, together.

This policy should prioritize just the few most important things to guide decision-making and resource allocation.

I am a long term student of strategy. By that I mean I'll never stop learning. What 'is' strategy? Strategy is a methodical series of planned actions that take you from the 'As Is' state (your current reality) to your 'To Be' state (where you need to be to deliver what your customers need). Strategy delivers your value proposition (the thing which defines the WHY and the WHAT you do to add value for your customers).

Una vez clara la VISION, es fundamental la mirada al interno para analizar con qué recursos se cuentan para hacer cumplir la MISION que nos lleve a esa VISION. Este status permitirá tener la claridad de como afrontaremos esa misión, dará luces del cómo y qué objetivos colocar en tiempos establecidos. Another way to make sure your Vision and Mission is dynamic and at the forfront of the organization is to incorporate the Strategic Plan goals and strategies into your PMO or Project Portfolio. By doing this in our Library, every new idea or project submitted by any member of our departments are reviewed through the lens of the Mission and Vision. Will this idea move us towards our Vision? Adding to what i have already suggested is ,Alignment of strategies always support in enhancement of collaboration within an organization.Imagine every employee work collaboratively for a common destination point, few of the results would be 1. Higher productivity 2. Optimized efficiency rate 3. Stability / sustenance of performance or results. 4. Enhanced employee morale, accountability and finally resulting in great employee satisfaction.

Outro parâmetro importante da gestão estratégica é o de que planejamento é uma atividade permanente, que demanda constante evolução. Não é uma atividade com fim em si mesma, mas sim uma rotina de criação de resultados para toda a companhia. Eu acredito que a manutenção rotineira de medição de indicadores, correção de rumos e criação de novas metas já impulsionam positivamente as equipes a alinhar missão, visão, valores, objetivos, metas e etc.

Imagine you set a course on your Sat Nav 5 years ago and you haven't updated your maps since then. How many changes have happened? Roads closed. New roads opened. Roadworks causing delay with no diversion to mitigate. Keep updating your maps (strategy). Keep checking progress towards your destination (mission). Keep checking that the City you're driving to is still where you want to get to for your customer (vision).

Strategic planning, defining and making that Mission and Vision a reality, needs to resonate with everyone in the organization. Everyone needs to see their contribution and know that the work they do supports and moves that mission forward. Our planning efforts included several listening sessions to hear from as many members of the organization as we could. Their direct input and ideas were incorporated into the plan. Everyone feels a sense of ownership and knows that the work they do contributes to meeting our goals and driving the plans forward.

Scenario Planning is often missed. Run exercises alongside your strategy which says "What If.....?" What is 'this' happens? What is we tried doing something different 'here'? What if we didn't do 'this'? Would it matter? Test your strategy regularly.

Effective communication is vital for successful strategic planning. Because of my background in executive-level strategic communications, I am hard-wired to include communications plans in the strategic process.
