These are my guidelines: 1. Understand your clients or readers. Have a dialogue with them early on and get a sense of what’s important to them. 2. If multiple clients made the same request, you know there’s enough mass and you should prioritize this task. If markets are moving on the back of a piece of news, you must be prepared to drop everything else and chase it. 3. We should be responsive to client feedback, but we must also safeguard our independence and credibility. A news or research provider will become irrelevant if it’s perceived as someone’s PR arm. 4. Don’t overpromise and underdeliver - this puts unnecessary pressure on your team and you might disappoint your clients in the end.
