How can sustainable design professionals ensure they are meeting deadlines and delivering quality work?

"In my experience, sustainable design goes beyond traditional human-centric approaches, embracing a life-centric philosophy and responsible innovation. In today's dynamic product design landscape, leveraging industry best practices such as design thinking is key—Think, make, test, and implement. Developing a design strategy that integrates design thinking with corporate strategy, along with a focused innovation process, is essential. It involves synthesizing a concrete problem statement, ideating multiple ideas, prioritizing concepts, creating prototypes, and swiftly moving through development phases to minimize risk and accelerate time to market."

First and foremost, know what you are talking about. I took 26 sustainability on line courses before I felt knowledgeable enough to talk about sustainability goals and requirements

-Study the project well and know what exactly is required . -define priorities. -Assign tasks for the team that is suitable with the deliverables time frame. -track the progress to assure task will be finished on time.

In my experience, you should always focus on what is important and not lose that goal. There are five tips I would recommend: 👍IPD Process(involved in early stages of all interested parties, clear Deliveries,etc) 👍Analyze the life cycle of your project and its environmental and social impacts. 👍Choose materials and technologies that save resources and energy. 👍Use passive design techniques that improve comfort and efficiency. 👍Prioritize the durability, functionality, and aesthetics of your solution. After all, the most important thing to ensure about the quality of what you are delivering is a clear scope of work that helps you to achieve the goals stated there and to involve your client in the process.

It is essential that the plan is thorough and all stakeholders buy into it. Minor adjustments to the plan, which are inevitable, need to be regularly shared and buy-in sought from all parties.

Focusing on the important and current items helps in delivering the project in time right time. Many times the time and efforts are given on the non essential items and then creating a last minute chaos during the execution.

Always plan ahead, define parameters and limitations earlier in the project, tackle on top prioritised issues. don't give up on quality when it comes to time issue, because this is for the long-term good.

Frequently, despite meticulous planning and earnest efforts to meet deadlines and deliverables through team coordination, there's an unexpected twist: that design idea emerges at the eleventh hour, disrupting your production schedule. Yet, deep down, you recognize its significance. Not every design idea adheres to the schedule. Embrace the discomfort, adapt, and push through to meet the deadline regardless.

One thing I have found helpful is the design part-ee or an early quick caricature of the design concept. It may be just a pet name for the project, a few phrases or a quick sketch, but it is what comes to mind directly after interviewing your client for the project requirements. Make it zippy and memorable. Share it early with all team members, and bring it to every progress meeting or charette as a north star.

It is more important to find teams that work well together - architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, ESD consultants, and contractors - than a 'dream team' of the best players in every field who may not collaborate well. That being said, these teams should be uncompromising in maintaining the best standards for the project. An understanding of local statutory submission requirements is also crucial - such that these submissions, and their float times, can be factored into the overall project schedule. As such, good project management is crucial, such that the project can be delivered on time, and meet its ROIs.

Understanding the project design brief (its expectations, requirements, certification(s) if any, budget and timeline) is key. Many designers tend to over/under design and this creates abortive works and lengthen the project's timeline unnecessary. Having sight of the project budget and timeline has to work hand in hand with the expected deliverables. In this way, quality sustainable design work can be delivered meeting the client's needs.

Efficient collaboration is key to successful sustainable projects. Here are key strategies: 1) Establish clear goals and emphasize sustainability. 2) Build a diverse team for fresh ideas. 3) Foster open communication for transparency. 4) Utilize project management tools for streamlined coordination. 5) Promote knowledge sharing within the team. 6) Break down tasks for focused expertise. 7) Monitor progress and adjust as needed. 8) Celebrate milestones to boost morale. These strategies enhance collaboration and increase the likelihood of project success.

-Delegate duties to free yourself for more important tasks. -Choose the right person by understanding every one ‘s strengths. -highlight timescale & provide guidance. -Follow up & communicate effectively. -be open to new ideas. -learn to say thank you(the magic of appreciation). Collaboration is all about working to achieve a shared goal. It shall be able to utilize different skills, knowledge and experience of every one involved. Being open to new suggestions and ideas from all team members through open discussion even if it means changes will lead to better problem solving ,increased productivity,& elevate morales. Contributing to overall success.

The power of collaboration and delegation is unstoppable. We all have different areas of strength, so when experts come together to work on a project, it is key that they all work within their area of expertise and utmost interest. Delegating tasks makes for specialization.

Trotz möglicher Herausforderungen, Rückschläge oder Misserfolge sollten wir uns nicht entmutigen lassen oder die Qualität unserer Arbeit beeinträchtigen lassen. Learn from mistakes: Coming from a manufacturing background, I recommend methodology is followed from ‘Theory of Constraints’ (TOC). It takes what I would describe as a scientific approach to leaning from mistakes, as well as a process of ongoing improvement. TOC hypothesises that every complex system (in my example a manufacturing processes), consists of multiple linked activities, one of which acts as the constraint (often referred to as the bottleneck, or the weakest link of the chain). To apply the theory, there is a step-by-step process that is followed: 1: Identify the constraint 2: Exploit the constraint 3: Subordinate everything else to the constraint 4: Elevate the constraint 5: Avoid inertia and repeat the process

Sustainable design is an iterative process. There's no single perfect solution. By continually learning from past experiences and adapting your approach, you'll consistently improve your ability to deliver high-quality work. Also, create and share blog posts showcasing challenges encountered and solutions discovered. This empowers others to avoid similar pitfalls and accelerates shared progress.

"In my experience, a significant challenge for designers lies in effectively pitching sustainable ideas, convincing stakeholders of the value proposition they bring to the business. Changing the status quo is inherently difficult due to risks related to product quality, implementation costs, business priorities and customer acceptance. It's crucial for designers to persevere, sticking to their passion and not being disheartened by rejections. Continuous improvement of ideas and business cases in an iterative manner is key. Additionally, learning to understand and address diverse opinions and feedback builds confidence across the stakeholders' diaspora."

Don't let mistakes define your future. Use them as springboards for improvement. Refine your SOPs, adjust your design process, or explore new technologies that address the identified vulnerabilities.

In the fast-paced world of sustainable design, it's easy to forget to take care of yourself. But burning out isn't good for anyone. So, make sure you take breaks, get some exercise, and do things you enjoy outside of work. Taking care of yourself helps you stay sharp and do your best work.

Off course all other things matter like Performance specifications, collaborative approach including client participation, delegation of work, planning but at all times the above quote gave us the right alignment. In some of our projects client felt we are getting delayed but the clarity achieved at those initial stages helped us gain the time back that was felt lost or even gave the confidence that the delay was worth the time spent.

When organizing a submission, time management is crucial. It’s important to efficiently address all deliverables while ensuring that the progress of other projects remains unaffected. Balancing deadlines and maintaining momentum across all tasks is key to a smooth and successful submission process. We pay attention on being clear as to what we deliver. We create a list of the material to be submitted which is communicated early on to our collaborators and clients. Understanding the load of work is imperative for effective time management. Another thing we try is to have a system of presenting our work. Color palette, fonds, information on drawings are all same in every project. This approach has proved very effective.

Honesty and transparency are paramount in any successful collaboration. By fostering co-creation and maintaining open communication, we can navigate the complexities together, ensuring a win-win-win outcome for all parties involved. Embracing a mindset of mutual respect and understanding allows us to work effectively towards achieving our goals together. If a client is unwilling to consider our expertise and insights, it may be best to respectfully decline the assignment to avoid any potential pitfalls down the road. Ultimately, prioritizing integrity and mutual benefit sets the foundation for a productive and fulfilling partnership.

One of the most important tools a designer has in developing quality work is educating clients. If we don't educate clients on the importance of the features we add along the design process it may get Value Engineered out or it may never end up in the project. Make sure they understand the value not just to the environment, but to the health and wellness of employees and/or customers, resilience, maintenance, tax incentives, pay back, etc. This way they can make an informed decision and we produce a great sustainable product that is trailered to them.
