In simple words, a risk assessment is important to identify possible weak point anywhere in your system. And when that weak point is found, your team or your organization can start to plan for preventive measures to ensure these weak points are not exploited and not evolved into a threat to your organization. The risk assessment essentially allows for these potential threats to be discovered, studied, and assessed to find a solution to prevent it from ever happening. Worse come to worse, you already have a plan to put in action if the weak point becomes a threat.

As a pentester, I agree that starting with a thorough risk assessment is crucial. Identifying valuable assets and their vulnerabilities helps prioritize security efforts effectively. It’s like knowing your armor’s weak points so you can reinforce them. Regular reassessments are also essential to adapt to emerging threats and evolving systems.

The first step is to identify and assess potential vulnerabilities and threats in your telecommunications system. This involves analyzing network infrastructure, software, and hardware for weaknesses that could be exploited by attackers. Additionally, consider the potential impact of different types of attacks, such as data breaches, denial-of-service, or ransomware.

Risk assessment in cybersecurity involves identifying what's important, such as data and computers, and spotting potential dangers like hackers or viruses. It includes finding weak points, like weak passwords, and analyzing risks by considering their likelihood and potential impact. Evaluating risks means deciding which ones are acceptable and prioritizing the biggest ones. Finally, you reduce risks by stopping risky activities, adding protections, transferring the risk, or accepting it if it's minor.

Design a secure architecture for your telecommunications system by implementing robust security measures. This includes using strong encryption for data transmission, implementing firewalls and intrusion detection systems, and using secure protocols for communication.

For a secure architecture the defense in depth concept can be implemented by securing the network layer(network segmentation, Network Acces control, firewalling, web filtering, IPS), endpoint layer security(EDR, host firewall), data security layer with disk encryption for data at rest, secure network protocol (ssl/tls,ssh...) for data in transit. I will also say email security is very important since phishing is the most used and accessible entry point for cyber attack. Implementing email protection solutions can decrease the volume of malicious mail by filtering them. Secure architecture should also consider business continuity by implementing redondancy to maintain availabilty (eg: load balancer, firewall HA cluster...)

I agree with this as a basic start. But, the end user is always the most vulnerable so don't spend all the money on just architecture but rather training to be a more secure user.

Keeping an eye on what is going on on the network and system is i will say vital and today there are many tools, some empowered by AI that can more and more accurately detect unusual acivities and known malicious pattern. Nowaday in the era of micro services, containerisation the environments are constantly changing, building and destroying large infrastructures is a mater of minutes and we can have thousands of containers. So The challenge is to be able to know what activity is normal in my environnement because it will help security analyst quickly identify false positive, reduce alert fatigue and gain time to analyse real suspicious events.

This is the most important thing. The normal training to mark a check a box for HR/ executives isn't enough. Having those that know that they are doing run constant internal phishing campaigns, drop USBs in the parking lot, etc. won't just train employees but get them in the actual mentality needed to run a more secure business and protect company data. The key is though it has to be constant. Someone just has to let their guard down once for an attacker to get in so always having an internal campaign run will keep employees on guard.

Teaching them about things like phishing attack, understanding the Web Vulnerabilities and safe online habits can make a huge difference Such as “Best Practices for Password Management”, importance of Firewall, The more they know, the better they can help protect the company, organization and keep everything running smoothly.
