Totally agree—it’s way better to build your network before you’re in a pinch. Hitting up industry events, joining associations, and diving into online forums are all great ways to meet people with fresh perspectives. But honestly, I also think that the real magic happens when you ditch the agenda and just focus on making genuine connections. If you approach networking like making new friends—without the pressure—you’ll end up with a solid crew that’s got your back when you need it. Having friends makes you powerful than ever !

This is very true and yet it is often very scary to do it in the beginning. The good news is that practice makes it easier over time. The more you do it the less those who ghost you will bother you and the more confident you'll be in approaching others and introducing yourself.

While I understand the importance of strategic networking, I personally find that my best connections emerge from a more spontaneous approach. I believe in networking with authenticity rather than adhering to a strict plan. For me, it’s not just about aligning with specific career goals or targeting key players—it’s about forming genuine relationships without preconceptions. This openness often leads to unexpected opportunities. I trust that meaningful connections will develop naturally when interactions are sincere, allowing both parties to benefit in ways that might not have been initially obvious. While strategic networking certainly has its place, I believe there’s also tremendous value in embracing a more organic approach.

It can be very effective to find someone who is 10-15 years (or more) years ahead of you and ask them how they networked at your vintage--how, where, with what kinds of people. That'll five you a starting point. As you try things out, you can also reflect on what you like and don't like, what seems effective and not, and adjust your strategy accordingly. You want to network in a way that feels fulfilling to you. Otherwise, it won't work.

Another way to offer value is to volunteer. Join an association's committees, offer to write in a newsletter, etc. Giving your time is an effective way to show your value in the beginning and as you're growing your expertise.

Yes and no. I agree that following up is important, but being too formal/ technical / professional or overdoing it can backfire at times and actually harm the relationship. Too many check-ins can come off as pushy or insincere. I think follow-ups should be more subtle—like a quick, genuine message when something truly relevant comes up. It’s all about striking the right balance, so you stay on their radar without overloading them and risking the connection.

We so easily default into networking within our known spheres--for me that's legal bar associations and other attorney-focused groups. I had to intentionally work to find things I could expand into to meet business professionals outside of the law. It has always been worth it.
