How have you approached sustainability when implementing smart city technologies?

There needs to be a broader consideration here. Cities impact on sustainability in many ways. Unrecyclable renewable energy infrastructure with an operational life of 10 to 20 years is an example. When is an action maladaptation? Are we making a siloed decision? In the same month of the same year the same government agency put out 3 strategies (agriculture, timber & energy). Each proposed a different primary use for the same land. No strategy referred to the competing land uses their colleagues were promoting or what the landholder would need to make that action feasible for their land and business. We need to also talk to key stakeholders so that we have plans that are deliverable and don't create land use conflict or distort markets.

Sustainability is all about improving peoples lives. For me, the central question then has to be: what will impact people the most? In my opinion, long-term actions should also be prioritised. Smart solutions (like more efficient transport, or ensuring digital access to government services) can support systemic transformations and help shrink inequality.
