You're hosting a live event with introverted speakers. How can you help them shine on stage?

When I'm hosting a live event with introverted speakers, I focus on creating an environment where they feel at ease and confident. I like to start with a relaxed presage, where we can all get to know each other over coffee. This casual setting helps everyone unwind and build connections before anyone takes the stage. I encourage my speakers to prepare their questions or talking points in a clear sequence, so they feel more in control of the flow. Speaking in a way that's natural to them, using language and a style they're comfortable with, makes all the difference. I let them know it’s okay to take their time, pause if they need to, and engage with the audience in a way that feels right for them.

By embracing their role as the subject matter expert, introverted lecturers can deliver their content more effectively and with greater authority.

Ask them first always but some things that have worked for me.. Verbal Encouragement before, Visual Encouragement during (depending on their comfort level with you some may get more nervous seeing you watching others may appreciate knowing you're watching), Verbal/Tangable Encouragement following (ex. handshake, pat on arm/shoulder, eye contact, honest feedback, and token of appreciation (depending on circumstance of course)

In my experience it is typically best to set up green rooms well away from networking areas regardless of a speakers personality. The reality is extroverted individuals will seek out opportunities regardless of where you put them but also need a place to focus before their presentation. When working with your speaker, make sure to ask detailed questions regarding their scheduling preferences, eating habits and overall how they prepare to interact with others. All of this will give you an idea of how to set them up for success and by proxy set yourself up for a successful event.

Al inicio de la conferencia puede ser útil mencionar que podrán realizar preguntas al orador, así, centrarán su atención analizando que dudas les podrían resolver. En dado caso, como parte del equipo, se debe de tener al menos una pregunta que ayude a romper el hielo y animar a otros espectadores a preguntar.

Existem boas opções aqui, as mais eficientes e simples envolvem modificações no formato: Trocar a palestra por um painel. Levar como entrevistador alguém que já tenha intimidade com o palestrante e essa pessoa fica com a "responsa" de ditar o ritmo das perguntas, pedir interação com a platéia e tudo mais OU montar junto com o palestrante um modelo de apresentação fechado, estilo um TedTalk ou Day1. Assim, ele fica tranquilo dentro do seu roteiro e slides, consegue usar um teleprompter e ter um cronômetro para visualizar o tempo de palco, além de planejar todos os momentos da palestra e escolher recursos de apoio visual, ele consegue pensar em como fechar com impacto, sem necessariamente interagir no palco após finalizar o conteúdo.

The audience at large will sympathise with a slightly nervous speaker. Fess up to it, if it helps! Being natural and real is just as powerful as giving a slick performance and delivery. It will help establish rapport with the crowd, which is the cornerstone to engagement.

If possible share with the speaker any hashtag for the event that guests may be using so they can familiarise themselves with just a few that is coming beforehand. This helps the speaker connect with said guests in the audience as they feels they have already gained an insight to them.

Anything more engaging than a traditional PowerPoint will catch some necessary attention. Even sharing the stage with a dynamic personality, whether a rockstar team member or an actual celebrity, can help get the message across instead of a monotone script delivery.

While every speaker type likes to be prepared, introverts tend to be more formulaic and as such deviations from the regularly scheduled programing can hamper their success. When working with more introverted speakers it is very important to do sound checks and dry runs in venue to help them become more comfortable with the environment. Also make sure during sound check to walk them through how you troubleshoot live production issues so they know how to navigate a mic or projector not working as to not disrupt their flow. Also make sure they are aware of how the session will run. If there is supposed to be a Q&A make sure they know and consider curating questions ahead of time so the speaker can prepare.

There's no substitute for practicing in the actual space, if available. Standing in front of the mirror in the dressing room, I find can sometimes be counter productive. There won't be a mirror on stage and you can become very self conscious staring at yourself! Use your limbs! Walking, gesturing and becoming a little animated helps with the rhythm of the delivery. Get used to pausing when you need and try not to panic in the silence. If you lose your train of thought, take a sip of the drink and regain your composure. Take your time and always try to look in control. Nobody knows the "script" don't stress if you go a little of piste!

Como decía anteriormente, es esencial que el orador conozca con antelación el lugar, el equipo, los micrófonos para conocer como se escuchará o si es que hay grabación en vivo, conozca en donde tiene que mirar. Además, si le permites que tenga una sesión de práctica, le puedes dar una critica constructiva sobre el volumen o el tono que esté usando.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box here. Prior to the event, ask what everyone’s favourite colour is, and present them with a silly item (fuzzy slippers, for example). As an ice breaker, make sure the audience also has the same type of item that will be visible to the speaker as a way of making them feel welcome. Might help offset any stage fright too. (Hey, if we are all a little ridiculous, it’s something to share a laugh about and bond over!)

The stage can be a daunting space for the uninitiated, the fear of standing there alone facing an expectant crowd. For the newbie, I'd definitely advocate the house lights up. Being able to see the faces of the audience is far less scary than staring into a black void! Obviously any furniture or props to make the stage area less alien will help with comfort as adequate drinks to sip. I've seen big rugs on stage to stand on, making it a little more homely. Obviously it must adhere to the tone of the event, but there's room for play if I can help ease the nerves of any first timers.

Komfort ermöglicht es Künstlern, sich voll auf ihren Auftritt zu konzentrieren, ohne durch körperliche Beschwerden oder Ablenkungen beeinträchtigt zu werden.

You have to let a speaker know they are seen. By this, I don’t mean reading 200 words from a piece of paper as their intro, but to let the audience know why they have been selected and why the audience is going to love them. Everyone has to feel at ease, it shouldn’t feel scripted. The bridge between the audience and the person on the stage is to find a way where we can all feel closer.

Mirror talk - get them to go over their words looking at themselves in a mirror 🪞 (or pretending to look in the mirror as done don’t like this Also get them to listen to themselves talk - so record their conversation and listen to it back - even on a voice over on a laptop as again done don’t like to hear their own voice - this way they unconsciously learning their speech 🎤 over and over - this way it becomes easier for them to become more confident in themselves and they are able to speak clearly in the day & if they do mess up they will correct themselves and know it’s ok to do so too - we learn and we grow daily with practise

If you have multiple speakers pay special attention to the energy of each one. As an introvert I would hate to go first but equally speaking after a high energy extrovert would mess with my own energy. Not to mention confusing for your guests. So ensure the topics flow but also energy flows✨

El orador no debes de dejarle solo, siempre debe de haber un encargado por si llega a haber fallas en el sonido, en el material audiovisual o por cualquier accidente. Es crucial que el orador se sienta que hay un equipo apoyándolo y quitándole preocupaciones.

Auch die Möglichkeit, sich vor oder nach dem Auftritt in einer ruhigen Umgebung zurückzuziehen, trägt zum Gesamterlebnis bei. Ein gut ausgestatteter Backstage-Bereich bietet den nötigen Komfort, um sich vor der Show zu entspannen oder nach der Show zu regenerieren.
