Mission, Vision and Values are just fancy words and statements written by the management team. There is no company that can be sustainable without having processes and structure in place that engage employees and help creating the desired company culture. But yeah, you should listen. And even better, take action. Create the processes and structure that is needed.

It's critical to create a big picture for team members. Businesses (and their teams) do not operate in a vacuum. They operate inside the vast interconnected living system of this planet. The more aligned our businesses are with the living systems of the planet, the more we are contributing to long term health of both planet and business, and by extension to our own jobs. There is an inherent self focus at the heart of sustainability - we want to survive, we want our businesses to survive. Understanding that financial sustainability, future sustainability of the business, and environmental sustainability are intrinsically linked to our own personal and environmental realities really helps people to get behind sustainability measures.

As a CEO, I believe in the power of leading by example. My commitment to sustainability isn't just about policy—it's about personal action. I strive to set a standard that resonates throughout our team. Seeing these practices in action day-to-day encourages everyone to adopt similar habits. Leadership, after all, is about demonstrating the values you want to see in your organisation.

If you were a team member and had a leader proposing you a sustainability goal that you are not ok with, would you prefer the leader to show and try to persuade you with their personal commitment to this specific goal, or the leader telling you a story about a team of theirs in the past that solved a similar sustainability issue and turned into a success, so you can better relate to? The example that you should lead with is not your personal commitment to sustainability, in my opinion, but a success story of a team of yours in the past that followed you and every member of it was aligned with a sustainability goal that you proposed.

For each objective, brainstorm key results that incorporate sustainability metrics. Ensure these new key results are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). These results can then be rewarded, compensated for, and incentivized!

I've written before and I'll say again: MONEY We might not want to admit it but money is way you change and incentivise in business. It is perhaps a dishonest approach at first but your team will certainly pay more attention to the need of change when money is the incentive. Then as the business matures with the change the incentive can adjust. We might not like it but money is the true driver in any business.
