You're facing power dynamics in a healthcare team. How can you ensure effective communication prevails?

Understanding the effective communication from senior doctors to the other team members of my branch specifically during planning the patient are so essential and important for the health care professionals to give perfect plan execution and treatment, effective communication skills and clear communication is key to successful treatment and understanding the patient’s needs and expectations and clear communication with their care providers is vital .once they know what they are dealing and what issues are being addressed and what areas they need help in their language skills plays the key role.

One thing that I have found helpful is effective communication during Surgery and procedures. Even the junior colleague can give a valuable input at the right moment that may improve the Outcome. The responsibility of this lays on the senior guys.

In my view the hierarchical view of healthcare delivery is has limited utility and can get in the way of effective communication. This is not to disregard it entirely but to recognise that hierarchy can get in the way of effective collaboration communication. What is more important in my view is a full understanding of the information silos, the communication interfaces and the functional relationships between different levels of the organisation. Healthcare is delivered in complex and adaptive systems and is better understood as a series of interlinked heterarchies.

Well, i will go a different route with this. 1, Build relationships. 2, Then recognize authority. 3, Be transparent and finally 4, Build Emotional Intelligence

Facing power dynamics in multi-functional teams is a frequent occurrence and the administrators should be on the lookout to spot such challenges much ahead of it becoming an impediment to work. A critical measure to prevent and mitigate this situation would be to promote openness. The teams where every individual feels empowered enough to put forward their input and critically question, are the ones that achieve success by harnessing the experience of seasoned professionals alongside leveraging the creative ideas of the fresh brains among them.

Promoting an open and transparent communication culture within a healthcare team is vital for fostering collaboration and enhancing patient care. Encouraging team members to share their thoughts, concerns, and ideas openly can lead to improved problem-solving, increased trust among team members, and ultimately better outcomes for patients. Creating a safe space where everyone feels heard and valued contributes to a positive work environment that supports continuous learning and personal growth, aligning with your interest in health empowerment.

Healthcare professionals often work in high-stress, hierarchical environments, where power dynamics and fear of repercussions can inhibit honest communication. Merely establishing regular meetings may not be enough to overcome these deeply ingrained cultural barriers. - Promoting openness should also extend to ensuring diverse perspectives are heard and valued. Healthcare teams often comprise individuals with varying backgrounds, experiences, and roles.

Openness makes everyone feel being part of the system and more responsible and will help improve the performance of every individual in the team only if the given opinions and criticisms are truly addressed and appreciated!!

Facilitate team-building activities and create opportunities for different professionals to lead discussions or projects. This not only enhances professional respect but also personal bonds, leading to a more cohesive team dynamic.

Outside of team building activities, consistency with supervisory/managerial behavior using compassion and professionalism builds trust with the rest of the team. It also demonstrates the expectations of the team therefore there is a shared behavioral and professional standard.

I agree and like the idea of staff being able to communicate and provide feedback but not sure that an anonymous system is the right way to go. Anonymous may only encourage distrust and defeat the purpose of promoting communication and encouraging cohesion within the team.

Es bestärkt aus meiner Sicht, dass sich die Mitarbeitenden weiterhin verstecken “müssen” und sich nicht trauen, offen zu sagen, was sie brauchen, was sie sich wünschen und wie sie sich fühlen. Wir sollten eine Kultur der Offenheit fördern, in der jeder den Mut und die Unterstützung des Teams hat, sich zu äußern. Feedback will geübt sein, und eine offene Feedbackkultur kann ein enormes Lernfeld bieten.

The impact of collecting and discussing feedback becomes particularly critical in a dynamic work environment, like healthcare. Mechanisms should be set-up for sharing “what could have been done better” after each time a new team huddles up and delivers a project, and the summary of it should be discussed in well-planned debrief meetings. This way, every team member would feel important and as a system, the organisation will become more inclusive. It also becomes crucial for the project managers and administrators to spend time in examining these contributions, so that the key learnings are documented and systemic processes be improved by addressing the most frequently encountered bottlenecks.

I agree, the anonymous feedback system is terrible. In my experience it creates tension. As a manager, I have spoken directly to a team mate in private to get unfiltered feedback and then coached on moving foward.

By recognizing everyone's expertise, we break down those invisible barriers and build a true team – a team where assertive communication reigns supreme.

O treinamento em comunicação assertiva para equipes de saúde é fundamental para melhorar a clareza e eficácia na interação entre os membros da equipe e com os pacientes. Ele ajuda a expressar pensamentos e sentimentos de forma clara e respeitosa, resolve conflitos de maneira construtiva e fortalece os relacionamentos profissionais. Para isso, o treinamento deve incluir técnicas de assertividade, desenvolvimento da escuta ativa e simulações práticas para aplicar o que foi aprendido. Extremamente importante a comunicação assertiva. Expressar de forma clara suas ideias é bem difícil,mas necessário em todos os espaços de nossa vida

Conflicts may arise not only between individuals but also between different professional groups or departments. Resolving these conflicts requires a nuanced understanding of the underlying power dynamics and the ability to navigate them effectively.

In conflict resolution the team members should 'dance' together and not wrestle together.Accurate empathy is the keystone.Also the junior functionaries placed at the bottom of the hierarchy should not be overburdened with the major share of the workload.

Respect everyones opinion and listen to peoples concerns, address their concerns and lead the team out of the conflict, with transparency and openess, Never let things like this fester in a team.

I will put them to watch that movie: ¨12 angry men¨, maybe not to polite, but sometimes storytelling works better than too much words, without not too much sense, perfect for this situation. Not much else to say.

What I have learned with power dynamics is that there are subconscious biases as well as miscommunication. First, I have been a moderator in this situation and provided a private space for each person to express themselves as to why they each feel friction and prompt them readjust mindset by 1) realizing each person’s role is different and comes with its own pressures. 2) ask each person to not think for the other person. The result was each party backing off and me being the moderator helped reframe the situation to foster collaboration with the least amount of tension. Second, if the parties involved cannot find common ground, delegate or designate specific tasks for each person to complete to accomplish a goal.

En mi opinión y experiencia las disputas de poder se reducen al riesgo que corre cada una de las partes involucradas, puede haber diferencias, pero siempre el responsable o mejor explicado, quien corriera riesgo de perder su matrícula va a prevalecer. Salvo que se encuentre una situación clásica de piramidalismo que se da en las especialidades medicas donde un medico senior le da ordenes a un junior, pero el primero nunca pone en juego su matrícula, algo que es muy frecuente y clásico abuso de poder dentro del ámbito medico
